PostPosted: 20:57 - 23 Apr 2010    Post subject: Help needed on tax & insurance Reply with quote

Right well i just insured my bike which is SORN at the moment and have my MOT tommorow morning, only problem is i can't tax it online for 14 days and won't recieve the insurance certificate for 3-5 working days. I need the bike for Monday to get to work so is there anyway of getting it taxed without the insurance certificate?

I was thinking of calling the insurance company in the morning and trying to get them to email it to me then print it off and take it down the post office? Or possibly call the insurance company when i'm at the post office and getting them to verify i have cover to the person at the post office? Not sure how strict they are about it.

Cheers Thumbs Up

Hi

Would expect the post office to be fairly strict about what they accept (strict being a polite word for it). Your only real hope is that they update the system quickly so you can tax it online.

By the way, by the strict wording of the law you are not actually insured until the certificate has been delivered. Bit bizarre.

All the best

Hmm i'll have to see if i can get a copy emailed to be by the insurance company, i know some companys only ever send you one by email so should be able to get one hopefully. I work in Reading so it's quite a police heavy area which is why i'm worried about being pulled over and not being on the system.

It's so frustrating how hard it is just to get on the flipping road!

Hi

From a tax renewal here it says that "All documents must be originals; not photocopies, faxed copies or downloaded copies", which suggests that if they were being really strict then an emailed ebike certificate (ie, the only one they send) wouldn't be OK.

All the best

I had my documents emailed to me by Carole Nash (Taxed it online) but thinking about it I don't remember getting any paperwork through the post! I'll be ripping the house apart tomorrow in case I mislaid them. Confused

I just printed off my certificate of motor insurance. Took to big PO in Crewe, they didn't accept stuff like that so I went to a small village PO and they did.

Why 14 days before you can tax it online?

After supplying

"Vehicle Registration Mark (number plate)
AND
Document Reference Number " online it will let you go through the process and get tax, since it's done electronically these days..

You could get done for not displaying a tax disc if caught(til it comes), but it's only a fine iirc. I haven't got mine for the car yet, usure if previous owner actually sent V5 off but I taxed it like a month ago and im still displaying old one. Embarassed

If I rode the bike tomorrow it'd be the same, I'd get fined for not displaying(£30?) and a slapped wrist. That's getting MOT'd/taxed next weekend so I feel for ya. Thumbs Up

lol it's not a police heavy area, you'll be fine riding without tax for a bit, don't worry about it.

Why can't you tax it online for 14 days?

You could always make an insurance certificate on your computer, print it off and use that to buy tax at the post office.

Ah that's alright then, compared to where i live it seems like theres loads. Then again the police station here shuts at 4 and closes at weekends Laughing

When i had bought he insurance the confirmation screen said i won't be able to for 14 days because the online database won't have been updated. Might just do it online then and if they come back to me saying it's not insured i should have recieved the certificate by then so i'll just send them a copy or something?

Everything's done 'live' these days, I bought my tax then went shopping and was followed by a T5, if it hadn't gone through I'd have been pulled. Thumbs Up

Who did you go with that're so crap they don't update for 14 days? Confused

It was H&R insurance, i thought 14 days was a bit of a long time for it to update as well. Good news is that the bike passed the MOT Dance!

Just about to apply for a tax disc online, can't be bothered to print stuff off and go down the post office. Just want to get out on the bike in the sun! I have the email on my phone for proof of insurance for if i get pulled anyway Smile

You can use www.askmid.com to check the insurance database.

Well that failed!

Apparently there's a gap in the licencing of the bike as it said i didn't declare it SORN back last year when in fact i did, so whether they try and do me for that or not is another story. Won't let me do it online either as it says i'm not insured, checked that askmid site and it hasn't been updated yet as it still says the bike isn't insured.

You'll note in some post I made a while ago that I, err, a friend had been riding around Reading daily without tax for sometime. Similarly, seen people driving without tax for some time too - seems what you have to watch out for is a) the tax-trap vans, and b) the vans that drive around the area with ANPR cameras catching parked vehicles (make sure your plate isn't obvious to the road in any way.)

A freind of mine, always parks down side streets rather than sit on main roads, sits right clos to other traffic where possible(say, when in a queue) and only takes caution round traffic cars, typically others won't have reason to randomly check your vehicle? e.g, a PCSO wouldn't see you going along and radio in for a check...

Wink (btw, not me - my cars is fully legit and my bike is tucked up not yet fixed in me garage) Cool

At least two types of road-tax mobile CCTV vans come down my small close. I've seen them and there's now a 206cc with a DVLA clamp on that can't have passed a MOT emissions test for some time judging by the smoke that's been coming out of it for some time!

best thing would be go to local insurance place and speak to a real person who will give you a tempory certificate which you can use to tax the bike

Try again, or tomorrow - it might update overnight.
