OK, I knaffed up and now Im stuck, I am replacing the bearings in my rear wheel and 1 side is in ok along with the spacer tube, but its the other side that is causing me problems, Its a recessed bearing and I needed a drift to seat it in fully and the only thing that I had that fitted was the old bearing which I successfully used as a drift - but then I realised what I did and have now jammed that bearing HARD against the new bearing which is seated fully in place.

In my attempts at removing said bearing I have managed to remove the inner race and balls but the outer race is stuck fast and nothing I seem to do will shift it.

I have tried dremmle it but the bearing just laughed at it. My normal grinder made mince meat of the inner race but I darent use it on the outer race as I may kill the wheel...

Any suggestions....

Cheers

lol not to worry you could try heating the wheel up to expand the metal around it get a biiig bowel or som suitable container and submers it in boiling water for a few mins. use plenty of grease to.

as an alternative to heating the wheel, you could try freezing the bearing race. Get some plumbers freeze spray (wickes sell it) it's easier to concentrate the spray, I used to use it a lot to put bearings in.

Have you got a welder? Run a bead of weld around the inside of the race and when it cools it will fall out. Put a disc of something non-weldable like ally or brass in there to protect the new bearing.

I have tried the freeze spray and that didnt work - the problem is I cant get any purchase on it and I cant get behind it because of its hard against the new bearing which is hard against the seat and the spreader tube.

Think welding a bead around it might be my best bet but Im worried about distroying the new powdercoating!!!!

Right then, do you still have the balls, the inner race and a slide-hammer?

If you do, fit the inner race to the slide hammer somehow - you could improvise something if you don't have a hammer. Now grease-up the outer race and put half the balls into it all next to each other. Now place the inner race into place where it would be and use a pick or thin screwdriver to spread out the ball bearings evenly around the bearing. Your inner race should now be captured inside the outer one by the balls and you can use the slide hammer to drift it out.

You need 2 things, heat, lots off it, and WD-40 or some kind of penetration oil.

you need a good bearing puller, it should be able to seat on the chamfered lip under the bearing, whereabouts are you? I have set of pullers, slide hammer.

For the cost of a new bearing i would drift the new and old bearing out together and fit a new one properly.

ive dremeled outer races before, and then split them with a cold chisel, you just have to be careful and take your time.

+1. That's how I used to do them. Once it's cracked it drops in and out no troubleO
