CBR400RR NC23, clutch issue

Hi, noticed that since I've had the CBR on the road the clutch will occassionally stick after sitting over night. When switched on in the morning the engine is fine, but as soon as I try to put the bike in gear it lurches forward and stalls. When I restart the bike it will lurch forward a little then its fine and doesn't give trouble all that day. To me it seems like my clutch plates are gummed up a little and may need replacing.

Any advice? All in I'd be looking at around £55 - £60 for steel and friction plates, plus a cover gasket.

Another small problem is that when at idle in neutral, there is a rustling type noise coming from the engine, this noise does go away when the clutch lever is pulled in, and comes back as soon as it is let out again. Is this a worn bearing? If so does anyone know what one I will need? I'm guessing one that looks like a washer with little needle rollers in the face, but don't know the part number for it :S

It might be worth getting a workshop manual to look at the exploded diagrams for part numbers etc.

EBC normally do ok cheap friction plates. Is the oil changed regularly?

I have a Haynes manual, but unfortunately no part numbers.

I changed the oil about 300 miles ago, when I first got the bike on the road, using exactly what the manual said, 10W40 semi synth.


genuine honda gaskets are £8 each, so might order one and some clutch plates and do them anyway

Try adjusting the clutch cable up, then run it for a bit out of gear with the clutch lever cable tied in and leave it tied up over night that should help clear any crud in the clutch.

Tbh I would have flushed the engine with some kind of flushing agent with the clutch held in to ensure any old sludge and varnish was well and truly gone from the clutch.

If the above doesn't help your plane/metal plates might need changing, Not a difficult job and you may as well do the friction plates whilst your in there.

A slack drive chain can give you some snatchness going into first too, not enough to stall the bike but any reduction in snatchiness can only help.

Still having the issue with the abnormal noise/vibration The sticky clutch seems to have disappeared for now, so not too worried by that now.

Does anyone know what could cause the noise and if it's actually just the noise it makes? A friends mk4 Fiesta has exactly the same noise and syptoms, neutral, clutch pedal/lever out and it makes a noise, put it in and it goes away :S I think it might be the release bearing or something, but not really sure

Aye, I'd take it apart and have a look. Keep the plates in order as you remove them and, if it comes off in one piece, you might get away with re-using the gasket, esp with a touch of sealant. Examine the clutch basket for grooved tangs and measure the plates and springs.
