Hi,

So I was checking the depth of my tread the other day as I have suspected for a while that I might need a new pair. From my understanding the minimum tread is 1mm.

However, taking my rear tyre as an example, in the picture below, the yellow arrow points to the centre of the tyre which is at 1mm currently, whereas the red arrows point towards the remainder of the tread which still has 2-3mm left.

https://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr160/TicallionStallion_2008/photo7.jpg

It's a similar story for the front tyre as well, so do I need to replace, or am I good for a little longer?

Cheers,

GhostRider

You need to replace them both Crying or Very sad .

They would prob last a little longer, but they wouldnt be legal, are prob not producing great traction/water displacement and you'd risk a "trungeoning" from the police.

What you need to do is buying a different tyre, they are bridgestone BT014's right?

Judging by the chicken strips and how much the middle is squared you aren't getting the best use out of them, a sports touring tyre would be cheaper and give you longer mileage and I doubt you would notice the difference in grip.

I like Pirelli Diablo Strada's

You should change the tyre when the profile wears flat, but not many people do.

I like Diablo Strada too. I suspect that they'll be up to anything you can throw at them.

I'm no riding god, but they allow me to corner right to the edge.

ps.Do people generally scrub their rear tyres to the edge of the tread or not?

pps. what bike is that?

I like these; loads of grip, good in the wet, last ages and ages and ages, and dirt cheap.

tyres that dont have at least 1mm tread depth across 75% of the tyre should be replaced.

Seems like a prett unanimous vote to change the tyres as I feared.

I had my eyes on some Avon Ultra Storm 2 tyres, which I can get a pair £195 and then £50 for fitting. How much do these diablos retail for?

It's a Hornet 600 btw, with 17in front wheel.

I got my Diablo Strada for 88quid each fitted.

Having seen the Youtube videos, I'd expected Ghostrider to have chicken strips in the middle of his Hornet tyres rather than the sides Wink

Depends which region you are from, BCF northern section for example has often turned up to ride outs with the steel wires poking through.

For £50! £60-£70 will buy you a home tyre replacement kit with the bead breaker the most expensive item. Hell if yer spent £70 on one you could change other peoples' tyres and charge 'em £5 a time too.

I get mine for £77 each and fit them myself.

I found the same tires would cost me £50 to fit or £30 loose wheel per pair.

Went itchys route except I paid more for my kit see here,

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=195581

It is a pain in the arse the first few times you do it, but I can tell I'm getting better at it.

If you went the route I went it will cost you about £100 but you should be able to change tyres for life, you will need to buy weigths and lube every 15-20 wheels I reckon but they cost under £15 for both .

I'd change if the profile goes too much. They're certainly questionable. Wet grip in a straight line will suffer more than anything else on that tyre.

I think nearly all road tyres square though, unfortunate as it is, the UK road network isn't laid out like Brands/Donny/Silverstone and as such a good amount of time has to be spent riding almost bolt up. Pretty unavoidable on any tyre, and becomes more apparant on sporty rubber.

My bro has Pilot road 2CT

Sports touring tyre with a softer rubber on the sides so you don't sacrifice much leant over grip. Best of both worlds really.

Says they are very good too, when my current tyres are past it I'll be trying a pair Thumbs Up .

Bear in mind when I say fitted, I don't just mean I'm taking loose wheels in, I'm wheeling my bike in there and waiting for them to be done. I am what you would regard as mentally retarded when it comes to anything bike mechanics related, which is a bit of a shitter but since I don't really know anyone else who is bike savvy, it means if I fuck it up I'll have an expensive pile of metal in the garage for an indefinite amount of time and no transport resorting in me having to use public transport, the cost of which would take away any money to repair the bike, thus a perpetual loop of shite would be formed. Given that I won't have to replace the tyres again for a long time, I'll live with the expense of getting them fitted, unless there is someone here local to Birmingham who would do it for less than what I was quoted??

Round where I live and for the purposes I use the bike, it does mean a lot of riding is done straight up, not much call for getting a lean on, but I hope to do some rideouts this summer so that might change. I was warned that the BT014s round off in the middle, but they were on the bike when I bought it.

I'm gonna have a look round and see how much I can get the Diablos for fitted

There is only one way to amend this, I used to be a crap mechanic then the only good mechanic left town I had to do everything myself, it is easier than you think it is a matter of confidence nothing more.

Once you've done it once it becomes easy.

Before my big one I was dodgy about changing tyres and fixing punctures, my first attempt took over an hour, I had so many punctures travelling just to turkey that I started getting good over 30 tube repairs and replacements later I can replace a tube in 5 minutes and have it back on the bike. I still pinch tubes now and again though.

I know what you are saying, and believe me I'd love to give it a bash, but I seriously do not have the money to go out and buy a shit load of tools, stands, and all other stuff, nor can I afford the time to spend days trying to bodge something back together, and then worry about whether it will fail me at 80 on the motorway resulting in my death.

When time and money are much better, I'd like to get an old CG or something, strip it and put it back together so I can learn everything for myself, but until that time comes, I'll trust my instincts that tell me that meddling myself is a very bad idea and will likely result in a non-rideable bike and a bus pass.

Tools? Stands? I maintained my NTV650P on the road with little more than the tool kit that came with the bike (and my old NTV600) a set of allen keys and some screw drivers.

I upgraded my toolset to have a full set of ring spanners for £12 later on. Stands can be replaced with milk crates car jacks even bricks!

Only recently did I buy a Halfords full tool set and most of that has been nicked too!

BT014s are god awful for squaring! Even after I stopped commuting on the Z, just taking it out for fun resulted in squaring pretty fast.

Nice tyres though, I really liked them.

In terms of when to change, legally speaking, you'll need to soon.

I've worn tyres down to the metal though. It's a question of what you're comfortable with. Less traction in a straight line isn't a big deal for me so long as I have grip on the edges still, with the proviso that I'm not getting pulled for the tyres obviously! But to be honest unless you're pulled for something else, or the metal is obviously showing, I doubt you're gonna get pulled for low tread.

There is you mistake, don't use them for commuting they are super sports tyres, one of the softest compounds bridgestone offer for the road, why would you commute on that?

I use them on the 'Four (well BT016's) and I only really use that for hooning in the lanes.

They were on the bike when I bought it, I stuck with them when it came to new tyre time because I knew I wouldn't be commuting much longer! I still found them terrible for squaring when hooning aswell though.
