KTM 950 aventures are the dogs bollocks and are very good offroad, l would avoid the F800GS there awful bikes.
BMW stopped making proper bikes in 1995 ____________________ Past:NRG50,AF1125(x2),NSR125RR,ZZR250,CX500,VFR400,KR1S,ZZR600(x2),CB400N,YZF1000(x2),KH125,Z200,FX400R,CBR954RR(x2)GPZ500S,GT550,VFR750F(x2),RD350N,XR650R,CBR600F,CB250,KDX250,YZF750R,CRM250,400EXC,KLR650,TTR600RE,DR350S,R100GSPD,RGV250,VMAX1200,DL650,KZ750 Present:G650XC,C12,CRF450X,1190ADV |

That's a bit gay
When you get a newer, more reliable bike (2 stroke maybe? ), will you be doing the trip? |

Africa Twins are expensive bikes yeah they hold their value really well. I got this cheap for what it is, but it was still a lot of money really. I expect to get my money back fairly easily, obviously I'll fix it first, but I'm just bored of it now and want something better/newer/younger now that I know I ride it lots.
Alexio,
The gasket going brittle and seeping oil is a common problem yes, however the head bolt snapping probably isnt.. moral of the story here is if you take the head off an engine, use new bolts when rebuilding it
MS51,
I'm hoping to have the AT all fixed, clean and on ebay for next weekend. Will be selling it complete with luggage etc (which I've spent ages improving and now they're awesome ) I'll buy a KTM 950 Adventure as soon as I find a decent one in my price range, doesn't seem to be many of them about though so might be a while
Phoneix,
I know what you're saying, but it's a slight bit different here, I wanted a KTM in the first place but I have a tendancy of buying bikes and then not riding them, so I decided to buy a cheaper adventure bike first to see if I actually ride it.. I do.. so I'm using this as an excuse to go for the KTM. I done the same with my off road bike, I bought a relatively cheap XR440 as I wanted to see if I'd actually ride it, which I do, lots, so I went and bought a WR426F when the XR broke. Don't regret that at all.
In reality the AT is a good bike, I'm just using it as an excuse to upgrade ____________________ Current Toys: 06 Yamaha WR250F | Nissan 350Z GT | Tech 4 Homes |

Agreed.
Even if the bolt doesn't snap when you're doing it up, when the engine heats up and things expand a bit you might find it snaps then and leaves you waiting for an AA truck... so yeah, tourque wrench + new bolts = Win ____________________ Current Toys: 06 Yamaha WR250F | Nissan 350Z GT | Tech 4 Homes |

Unfortunate about the bolt snapping... I have never heard some many problems with an AT before! All I can say is that I am glad that I wasn't with you when it broke, you must have been very very annoyed. ____________________ Past: Honda x8rs, Honda City fly, Honda Hornet 250, Honda VFR750, Yamaha xt600e.

I was annoyed definetly, more depressed then angry tho, I can't even describe how much I've neeed/been looking forward to this trip then I got my stove out and made a coffee and cooked a tin of sausage n beans whilst waiting for the AA oh and tested out my "self inflating mat" by self inflating it means you gotta blow it up yourself hahahah (wee airic - doesnt seem to want to self inflate unless I'm doing it wrong)
Most of the problems with my bike are down to the previous owners neglect and lack of maintenance, I've fixed so much so far.. I'm probably at the end of it all, I mean, I've done a full service, rebled rear brakes, new pads, new front calipers and lines, cleaned the carbs and choke cables, lubed everything up and everything seems to work lovely in general.. the bike was riding soooooooo well today since the full service. Shame really! ____________________ Current Toys: 06 Yamaha WR250F | Nissan 350Z GT | Tech 4 Homes |

If you hadn't bought the AT I would've never been able to enjoy the following conversations:
[On a rideout I notice Sparks is suddenly a dot in my mirrors, so I pull over and wait. After a bit he catches up.]
Me - "What's up?"
Sparks - "I've run out of brakes."
[Yesterday. I turn off onto a little country lane for a 'comfort break'. Sparks pulls up behind me, instantly creating an environmental disaster. The bike is pissing out oil and the entire rear of the bike is coated. A puddle of oil has formed inside the rear wheel.]
Me - "Christ!"
Sparks - "I thought it was a bit slippy."
Come to think of it, I don't think I've been on a single rideout with the AT which hasn't involved limping home or a recovery vehicle of some kind.

I really don't know how I didn't fall off to be honest, suprised I didn't notice the oil when I went sideways out of that layby
Ah well, KTM soon will do some more local riding and maybe a weekend away on the AT before I go for the KTM though I guess.
On the plus side, since the service etc the AT runs soooooooooooo well. ____________________ Current Toys: 06 Yamaha WR250F | Nissan 350Z GT | Tech 4 Homes |

Really sorry to see you're back already - always next time and a bonus if you can re-bank your leave for another time.
Well, if you are interested in the BMW F800S I know of an absolutely mint 08 one just up for sale.
Other than that I do know of someone who was selling a T reg AT if you've not been bitten too badly this time - not sure of any more details but it is in great condition.
PM me if you're interested ____________________ 'The core of a man's spirit comes from new experiences'
