The AT will be fixed and on ebay by the end of the week. Looking at either KTM 950 Adventure or possibly a BMW F800GS although I'll have to open my wallet quite wide for the BMW. Shocked

An epic 41.6 miles before the rocker cover bolt sheared itself meaning the rocker cover practically came off and spat all its oil out everywhere. Stripped the bike by the road but no chance of removing a sheared bolt from the engine by the side of the road! It's a "special" bolt too so I'll have to get a part from Honda which will be a few days at earliest Rolling Eyes so guess I'm going back to work on tuesday!

Pretty unlucky to get that happen on an ultra reliable Honda.
And i wouldn't expect a BMW to be anymore reliable. I test rode a 1200GS and it broke down on the test ride... and a few guys on my V Strom forum have reported unreliability on the 800GS they've owned.

Think I'm going to go down the 950 route, done a fair bit of reading this afternoon and a lot of ADV rider people have swapped their GS's for 950's and not looked back... they're also a few k cheaper... I don't want to spend tooooo much as I'm trying to buy a house. I do like the look of the F800's but I like the 950 too and last time I rode Dom's for about 15 or so miles I really, really liked it.

Once the rocker covers fixed on my AT thats everything sorted except for the front brake discs, but to be honest I just want to get something newer, lower mileage and less chance of things going wrong.. the AT is awesome when it works, but I just want newer and shinier now I know I actually ride lots. It was riding soooooooo much better today since I done a full service, air filter, fuel filter oil + oil filter etc!! shame its all the new oil that I've now lost Laughing

I really want a transalp if I can afford one in the next couple years but they're pretty similar to the africa twin aren't they? Is this a common issue?

That's a bit gay Sad

When you get a newer, more reliable bike (2 stroke maybe? Wink), will you be doing the trip?

Oops, still, once you've replaced the bolt surely it makes sense to keep the bike and use it, i've never understood why people buy bikes, spend loads of money fixing it up and making it good, just service costs enough, and then when a tiny little thing happens offload it and buy something else. It's fixed, carry on, one less thing that's likely to break as it's now new. Go and buy a BMW or a KTM and any number of problems could occur with that.

Africa Twins are expensive bikes yeah they hold their value really well. I got this cheap for what it is, but it was still a lot of money really. I expect to get my money back fairly easily, obviously I'll fix it first, but I'm just bored of it now and want something better/newer/younger now that I know I ride it lots.

Alexio,

The gasket going brittle and seeping oil is a common problem yes, however the head bolt snapping probably isnt.. moral of the story here is if you take the head off an engine, use new bolts when rebuilding it Thumbs Up

MS51,

I'm hoping to have the AT all fixed, clean and on ebay for next weekend. Will be selling it complete with luggage etc (which I've spent ages improving and now they're awesome Laughing) I'll buy a KTM 950 Adventure as soon as I find a decent one in my price range, doesn't seem to be many of them about though so might be a while Sad

Phoneix,

I know what you're saying, but it's a slight bit different here, I wanted a KTM in the first place but I have a tendancy of buying bikes and then not riding them, so I decided to buy a cheaper adventure bike first to see if I actually ride it.. I do.. so I'm using this as an excuse to go for the KTM. I done the same with my off road bike, I bought a relatively cheap XR440 as I wanted to see if I'd actually ride it, which I do, lots, so I went and bought a WR426F when the XR broke. Don't regret that at all.

In reality the AT is a good bike, I'm just using it as an excuse to upgrade Thumbs Up

Agreed.

Even if the bolt doesn't snap when you're doing it up, when the engine heats up and things expand a bit you might find it snaps then and leaves you waiting for an AA truck... so yeah, tourque wrench + new bolts = Win

Unfortunate about the bolt snapping... I have never heard some many problems with an AT before! All I can say is that I am glad that I wasn't with you when it broke, you must have been very very annoyed. Laughing

I was annoyed definetly, more depressed then angry tho, I can't even describe how much I've neeed/been looking forward to this trip Sad then I got my stove out and made a coffee and cooked a tin of sausage n beans whilst waiting for the AA Laughing oh and tested out my "self inflating mat" by self inflating it means you gotta blow it up yourself hahahah (wee airic - doesnt seem to want to self inflate unless I'm doing it wrong)

Most of the problems with my bike are down to the previous owners neglect and lack of maintenance, I've fixed so much so far.. I'm probably at the end of it all, I mean, I've done a full service, rebled rear brakes, new pads, new front calipers and lines, cleaned the carbs and choke cables, lubed everything up and everything seems to work lovely in general.. the bike was riding soooooooo well today since the full service. Shame really!

If you hadn't bought the AT I would've never been able to enjoy the following conversations:

[On a rideout I notice Sparks is suddenly a dot in my mirrors, so I pull over and wait. After a bit he catches up.]

Me - "What's up?"
Sparks - "I've run out of brakes."

[Yesterday. I turn off onto a little country lane for a 'comfort break'. Sparks pulls up behind me, instantly creating an environmental disaster. The bike is pissing out oil and the entire rear of the bike is coated. A puddle of oil has formed inside the rear wheel.]

Me - "Christ!"
Sparks - "I thought it was a bit slippy."

Come to think of it, I don't think I've been on a single rideout with the AT which hasn't involved limping home or a recovery vehicle of some kind. Razz

Sod Hondas, go orange! Thumbs Up

I really don't know how I didn't fall off to be honest, suprised I didn't notice the oil when I went sideways out of that layby Laughing Whistle

Ah well, KTM soon Thumbs Up will do some more local riding and maybe a weekend away on the AT before I go for the KTM though I guess.

On the plus side, since the service etc the AT runs soooooooooooo well.

Really sorry to see you're back already Sad - always next time and a bonus if you can re-bank your leave for another time.

Well, if you are interested in the BMW F800S I know of an absolutely mint 08 one just up for sale.

Other than that I do know of someone who was selling a T reg AT if you've not been bitten too badly this time - not sure of any more details but it is in great condition.

PM me if you're interested Thumbs Up

Thanks Caroline but I think I've settled on a KTM 950 adventure Smile going to wait a few weeks or so to save up some more cash so will keep riding the AT for the time being.
