Posted: 08:38 - 03 May 2010 Post subject: How to not pay Piage tolls |
 |
|
I alluded to this a few months ago and left it hanging in the air since it is touring season coming up I thought that I would share.
Essentially a couple of Germans taught me how to not pay the piage tolls in France at the unmanned automatic booths. Which in such economic times may save you a few quid.
The problem with going round the barriers is there are detection cameras which set off a alarm and cause a cop car to intercept you later on.
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK
The German bloke's brother worked on the software for the booths, the software has a critical weakness, in that it uses the offside rule in football. If you see a car stopped at a toll booth picking up a ticket paying, you pull in behind him, if you can keep the space between your front wheel less than 7 inches from his bumper while passing through the piage booth. The alarm isn't triggers and no cop car intercepts you. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will. Makes sense as the camera/sensor for the barrier will just see the bike as a trailer etc.
Not worth the risk if the Gendarmeries catch you though. ____________________ Past:NRG50,AF1125(x2),NSR125RR,ZZR250,CX500,VFR400,KR1S,ZZR600(x2),CB400N,YZF1000(x2),KH125,Z200,FX400R,CBR954RR(x2)GPZ500S,GT550,VFR750F(x2),RD350N,XR650R,CBR600F,CB250,KDX250,YZF750R,CRM250,400EXC,KLR650,TTR600RE,DR350S,R100GSPD,RGV250,VMAX1200,DL650,KZ750 Present:G650XC,C12,CRF450X,1190ADV |

I did similar a services I had stopped at in France - noted a pedestrian side exit that went to a local road, checked on the GPS and the next junction wasn't far, so managed to squeeze the bike through (was a big gate for pedestrians, but with a strong spring to make it harder.)
I hadn't lost the ticket, just felt like saving some money . |

I can't be arsed with paying tolls, just use N' and D's in France and local roads in Italy ... takes longer but the views and food are so much better |

Better way of avoiding paying at auto-tolls:
Place the ticket under a magnet (tankbag magnets work) when you receive it. When you insert the ticket into the automatic peage the ticket will be rejected.
Repeat this three or four times making sure you look bemused.
Eventually push the help button which will put you through to the operator. Act stupid, do not speak French and keep saying "I don't understand".
Eventually the exasperated operator will lift the barrier and you will be allowed through.. ____________________ NSR125RR - ZXR750H1 - ZX9R E1 - GSF600S - GSF600SK3 - VFR400-NC30 - SV1000N - ST1100-R - CBR900RR-R - GSF1200SK5 - GSF600SK1 - VFR1200FA - GSXR1000K2 - ZZR1400 D8F

Or you'll have to pay full price from the furthest toll rather than the typical 1/2 price for bikes |
