I alluded to this a few months ago and left it hanging in the air since it is touring season coming up I thought that I would share.

Essentially a couple of Germans taught me how to not pay the piage tolls in France at the unmanned automatic booths. Which in such economic times may save you a few quid.

The problem with going round the barriers is there are detection cameras which set off a alarm and cause a cop car to intercept you later on.

USE AT YOUR OWN RISK

The German bloke's brother worked on the software for the booths, the software has a critical weakness, in that it uses the offside rule in football. If you see a car stopped at a toll booth picking up a ticket paying, you pull in behind him, if you can keep the space between your front wheel less than 7 inches from his bumper while passing through the piage booth. The alarm isn't triggers and no cop car intercepts you.

Makes sense as the camera/sensor for the barrier will just see the bike as a trailer etc.

Not worth the risk if the Gendarmeries catch you though.

I went through one before as the machine took 5€ off me but didn't register it. The cops couldn't understand me and i refused to give any more money. In the end they just wanted to get rid me so told me to leave. only took 10mins

It's going to be quite difficult to keep your front wheel less than 7 inches behind the bumper of the car infront when you have no idea when and how fast he's going to accelerate, yes you could keep close, but 7 inches until you're through the barrier, it's a gamble. Add to that the risk you end up whacking them up the ass, more hassle than paying the toll, you try it Itchy and tell us all how it goes.

If it was a car, you could presumably stick your front wheel just in front of their rear bumper to the right hand side, presuming there's a little space.

I`ve lost a ticket before while staying overnight at a Etap on the services. While I was there I discovered a gate at the back of the hotel that lead to sevice road where the hotel staff parked their cars. A quick check of the GPS showed the road lead onto the N road running parrallel to the toll road, and if required back onto the toll road at the next peage. So next morning I popped off 1 pannier, wheeled the bike thru the gate, parked it up in the car park, re-fitted the pannier. Checked out of the hotel and rode the bike down the N road for a while, before re-joining the toll road saving myself around 12 euros on the orginal trip

I did similar a services I had stopped at in France - noted a pedestrian side exit that went to a local road, checked on the GPS and the next junction wasn't far, so managed to squeeze the bike through (was a big gate for pedestrians, but with a strong spring to make it harder.)
I hadn't lost the ticket, just felt like saving some money Smile.

Better way of avoiding paying at auto-tolls:

Place the ticket under a magnet (tankbag magnets work) when you receive it. When you insert the ticket into the automatic peage the ticket will be rejected.

Repeat this three or four times making sure you look bemused.

Eventually push the help button which will put you through to the operator. Act stupid, do not speak French and keep saying "I don't understand".

Eventually the exasperated operator will lift the barrier and you will be allowed through.. Mr. Green

Or you'll have to pay full price from the furthest toll rather than the typical 1/2 price for bikes

Pulled up at the Booth once and got waved through when I started to struggle for the money. For the next few miles was a bit concerned that I had misunderstood and would have someone chasing after me.
Does anoy me in Italy where I was getting charged the same a cars though.

I agree. Just did a 2650 lap of France and Germany like that and enjoyed all types of road, great scenery and by chance loads of wine routes. However, if you choose to do this, I suggest you tank up every time you see a gas station as France is huge and you can ride for hours on empty roads through shut towns.
I carried a full spare can of fuel which was never needed in an emergency but was handy to fill up at a campsite in the morning in the middle of nowhere.

I found that Super U and Leclerc have the best fuel prices and are worth detouring to find, they take any credit / debit card - but they do shut for lunch !

PS A Karma warning came up for this - why ?

Hmmm depends on where you go in France , a lot of Leclercs still are only Carte Bleu in some of the more remote areas of the south and unmanned for a lot of the time.

Basic rule of thumb when travelling "off motorway" any where in Europe is always fill up every 100 miles or two hours of travel and just before you stop.

One it gives you a rest and two it means in theory you will have a full tank to find somewhere to stay and if possible be full ready for an early departure the next day.

Even in a lot of the more interesting places in the UK you will be pushed to find a 24 hour garage within range if you are on reserve!

Just take a satnav... easy to find petrol all the time.

The only issue is whether the machines will accept your UK card. The Frenchies didn't like mine

Nope - been caught like that as well, on a peage where all the fuel stations were being refurbed for a two hundred mile stretch or just closed for the night and only just managed to get to a Leclerc on fumes. And two of the stations on the GPS off the peage and on the way to the Leclerc, that BTW was not on the GPS, were closed for the day.

Don't depend on a GPS.... unless you are incapable of imaginative thought! They are just a tool and a lot of tools use 'em Laughing

However I use one mainly as a speedo and as a track logger , but also carry a route card and a map... as well as a survival compass. Only an idiot depends on one vulnerable bit of tech.

Lol, yeah i did laugh heartily when they tried to use GPS on Top Gear while in Romania.

Having been there a few times, I know you're never going to get around using one.

Never run out of fuel though. I guess the 50+mpg from the ZXR750 helped in that sense.

I i was in your situation I would have got off that Auto Route asap and headed into the nearest village and took it from there.

When you preview a post, if it contains a swear word or suspected text speak, it says

' Using abusive language is not the way to inner peace, grasshopper. Your karma will suffer'

below the box you wrote in.

That is because you have such a titchy tank, you have to be aware of it's range . With the 230 mile plus range to play with on my GS when you want to make miles up it is sometimes easy to break your own rules, in my case this is fill up every hundred miles or two hours depending on which comes first. Very Happy

In large chunks of Europe you cannot depend on finding fuel just off "motorways" as often it can be several miles to the nearest habitation. In places like France, particularly in the central and southwestern areas we have ridden for 3 hours along high roads like the Route du Fromage Ossau-Iraty in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques without seeing another human on the road let alone fuel stops.
