Another day another problem...

Ran out of petrol today, managed to get some and everything was fine. Went into the GPO, came out and my bike wouldn't start - the battery was completely dead. Long story short.... got the AA out who stuck it on charge for a bit and followed me home - top guy Thumbs Up

Why did this happen in the first place? It's a brand new battery, only been used for 2 weeks! For some reason the bike isn't charging it. I know cars have alternators, but what is responsible for keeping a bike battery charged?

I need my bike to be fixed Sad

You have a CBR600 according to your signature. This means your regulator has packed up. It is the same regulator I have got on my Africa Twin, same thing happens to them occasionally.

Get a volt meter and with the engine running measure the voltage across the terminals at tickover, it hould be about 12ish volts. Rev the engine a little and the voltage should rise to about 14 volts. If it doesn't then your battery won't be charging.

Easy to change for a new one, two bolts and a plug.

That's perfect and sound about right. I think it was running 10v's on it's own (6 when it was first started) and was going up to 12v when revving it really high. I'll have a look to see what sort of price they go for. So this should sort my problem? Smile

make sure you have a fully charged, un-knackered battery attached to the bike before concluding anything.

Battery is fine and is almost brand new. It isn't fully charged beacuse the rectifier is stopping it from being changed.

Would this be an ok replacement? https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/UK-Seller-Regulator-Rectifier-Honda-CBR600-FM-FS3-91-03-/200455697416?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item2eac173408

Yea of course not, that's why my bike was dead and it wouldn't start - which is all down to the battery not being charged properly, right?

never use main dealer..

either source it on ebay (you're looking at around £50 for a pattern part)

or look on davidsilvers - www.davidsilverspares.co.uk

check part numbers with the fiche - https://fiche.ronayers.com/Index.cfm/Module/Main/TypeID/26/Type/Motorcycle/MakeID/1/Make/Honda/YearID/35/Year/1994/ModelID/7441/Model/CBR600F2/GroupID/326182/Group/WIRE_HARNESS_-_F2_-_91-94

then search on davidsilver..

https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/parts/by-part-number/partnumber_14790/

looks like a genuine one from them is £85 which is better than £120+ but as said you can get cheaper on ebay.

worth saving those links tho, if you want genuine items davidsilvers will be the cheapest to get em and the fiche is useful when finding those items. Smile

You can't do any reliable diagnosis, including the charging system, with a flat or busted battery. While you almost certainly have a wiring fault or a regulator fault, but all depends how sure you want to be before forking out 120 plus vat. Also note your new battery may be shafted now as well if it's been under or over charged.

I bought mine off Ebay, £56.

Is there anyone near you with a same era bike, you can try theirs out as a test?

Edit

I am in Croydon if you want to try mine. 97 CBR 900.

My brother has a 1995 CBR (F3) mine is F2 - would they be interchangeable? Thanks for the offer though, Minty!

I would have thought so. I remember looking for my one and was surprised at just how many different models used the same one.

Have a google and see if the connectors are the same?

I personally would be tempted to avoid a honda genuine part as it possibly would be another duffer. Hondas are generally put together well, but seemed to have bought their rectifiers from the lowest bidder.

When I had a CBR6 I bought one on ebay from Hong Kong for about £25 new. It worked, might not last long, but nor does the £120 genuine one.

I have seen ATs with holes drilled in the side panel that covers the regulator. The theory being that it's overheating which kills them so a bit of extra air over the cooling fins might help.

I've only recently learned that Honda stators tend to expire after a certain amount of time, expecially if you do a lot of low speed riding. Urban commuting tends to kill them.

If the reg/rec turns out to be good look at the stator. Also the charging problems I had on my CBR6 turned out to be a bit of the loom shorting on the frame. The reg/rec was innocent! Smile

Mine tends to have the infamous rattle occasionally on start up, make it sound like a bag of shit!

Ordered my new regulator - £30 off ebay from the link above. Hopefully that should sort everything out!
