Im sitting in the library currently, and the guy next to me just receives a phone call. This being the 21st century ofc you take the phone call loudly enough that the person sitting in the next cubical can not only hear you but also the tinny voice of the person on the other end.

The gist of the conversation from what i gather is his girlfriend is at a petrol station and does not know how to use the air machine Shocked

So, he explains it to her in a way that would have an author of the "For Dummies" series of books facepalming, everything from which way to unscrew the valve cap to how to operate the digital machine, yes, thats right you put your 20p in, press one of the 2 buttons to set at the right pressure and connect and wait for the beep, Who woulda thought...

Im shocked enough to post this thread, how did she get her licence? did she suck the examiners dick? i know thats probably not tested, but christ it transpires she has been driving around at 9PSI in her front tyres for god knows how long....

I was going to say something to the guy after he hung up, but felt to embarrassed for him, i will avoid eye contact so he does not see the contempt i hold for his woman, she presumably operated the vehicle to get to the petrol station yet does not know how to work one of the simplist machines known to human-kind...

That is all...

Nah the UK population as a whole has generally and purposefully been engineered to be incapable of doing things for themselves.

The government likes this because such people are easier to control and manipulate, I mean how many people understand my economic rants? Business loves this too as such people are easy to manipulate.

I see many people these days are children but in adult's bodies who won't even try for fear of failure, something has been lost confidence and the roll up sleeves type attitude. I was rather surprised when a vacus girl next door seriously asked me to open a tin for her (she had gotten so used to ring pull tins she didn't know how a tin opener worked).

I mean look at how many threads there are demostrating this lack of confidence in performing simple repairs on their own bikes.

I remember my dad being able to fix anything and everything around the house, yet I get endless calls from my sister her bf to go round and do the simplest of repairs.

Maybe BCF should start a fight club or something? On the first night he'd be made out of a loaf of bread, by the 4th week he'd be carved out of wood and be afraid of a whole lot less.

I was on the phone to the missus about pumping the tyres up, in a library today. It kind of felt like the wierdo in the next cubicle was masturbating to my voice as I spoke. I felt uncomfortable and avoided eye contact when I left too.

What a co-inkydink. I guess it means there are freaks everywhere.

That's nothing. I've driven round in my car with the front driver side tyre on about 2psi. Can't say it was the smoothest ride ever. Felt like a total gimp when I realised what had happened.

In my defence...actually, no, I don't really have any defence. I was just dumb.

i'm going to play devils advocate and say this isn't just women.

i know plenty of them who can do all these things and plenty of men who can't.

i think its just more natural for us as we are brought up more by men who did these things in those days, just like girls hung around their mums and most can probably sow a button yet most men can't, something i wish i could remember how too

I agree somewhat with your rant on general fixing and whatnot itchy, but this is very very basic, -1 spanner haynes kind of stuff.

If you are going to drive a car you should know certain basics...

Nicely done Minty, i thought about having a shady wank, but to be honest the stupidity was too much of a turn-off, besides if you are going to talk on the phone in a library expect people to listen to your conversation as its rather distracting...

To be honest it swings in roundabouts. In someways I'd rather these woman (and unintelligent men) aren't allowed anywhere near these machines.

A couple months back there was a thread where someone mentioned a woman dropped a Ford KA in to a kwick-fit and the front tire pressure was about 50PSI for both wheels because she had no idea what it was supposed to be.

Unless people are shown such things, how the heck are they supposed to know? I was in my Dad's girlfriends car the other day, ready to take her out for a driving lesson, my Dad asked her where the manual for the car was, as he needed to check her tyre pressures.

I said (because it's a small car, similar to mine), I'd guess she needed about 33psi, and Dad said 'no that doesn't sound right to me...' and then continued to look for the manual.

So I then asked the girlfriend if the tyre pressures were on a sticker on the panel where the driver door closes (because that's where mine is), and Dad got out and looked. And there it was, and I was right 33psi.

My Dad's an engineer, very intelligent, and he didn't know what the psi should be on that particular car. So, I think you dissing a woman for not knowing what to do is flawed.

I phoned my boyfriend today so he could help me fill up my tyres at one of those awkward air machine-a-majigs at the petrol station. I have a very girly voice for those who don't know me.
Anyhoo, he sounded quite embarrassed and nervous as he talked me through the harder parts (such as putting the coin in the machine) and later text me to tell me some weirdo in the cubicle next to him was mouth-breathing laughter and snorting on his cheesy wotsits.
I can only imagine them both avoiding eye-contact when they left their library!

Not knowing the PSI maybe, but I'm guessing your dad knows how to use an Air Machine. And that your dad's lady isn't dense enough to have to phone in for help when confronted by one.

Not knowing the pressure your tyre is supposed to be. -- ok
Not knowing how to find out the pressure -- pretty dumb but forgiveable
Not knowing/being able to work out that Up and down arrows will increase or decrease the number on the screen respectively. -- very special.
Not knowing that machines with a coin slot and pictures of coins and prices require money to work -- fucking dumb.

There are a couple more but you get the idea, its dumb. But it is a bit different to people being worried about fixing their bikes, the people you should be more worried about are the ones who didn't know people who aren't mechanics can fix things.

This is the trouble with mobile phones. They encourage people to ask someone else when they would otherwise have to make decisions and work things out for themselves.

Personally, I think there is nothing more tragic than people in the supermarket (usually blokes) on the phone to someone at home (presumably 'the missus'), discussing what kind of curry sauce / washing powder / pantyliners to buy. For fucks sake, just make a decision and if it's wrong, then tell the lazy bint to do her own shopping next time.

FWIW, my gran showed me how to do tyre pressures when I was about 4 years old.

its not really that though is it, you can tell the difference in handling between a flat and correctly inflated tyre.

Dunno. Some of those low profile jobs can be rediculously low before you'd notice.

The tyre pressure machines they have on French Autoroutes are pretty dumb. They look like a big michelin man. You hold the nozzle on the tyre then press the up button to add more air or the down buttomn to let some out. Each press of the button adds a squirt more air and you keep going until the dial gauge shows the correct reading (rather than the ones here where you preset the pressure and let the machine do the rest).

There is a flaw here though. The buttons and guage are on the michelin man thing and you can't both hold the nozzle on and press the buttons at the same time. When you are doing the tyres on the opposite side, you can't see the guage either.

This means it is a two man job to blow up your tyres!

Never had to live with a woman have you? Laughing

Itchy certainly has a point i.e lack of basic bike repair skills etc, and I think this boils down to the fact that, unless your mom/dad/brother etc teaches you when you are young, then it isn't until a situation confronts you where you actually think to yourself "shit, how do I do that?" Having never done it before or even have the faintest idea about said task isn't going to have you racing to the tool box to take whatever apart, particularly with bikes/cars etc.

Thing is I remember in school, when getting taught absolute bollocks such as what gods do hindus worship, what shakespere meant in Act 1, scene 4, at the 4th iambic pentameter in Macbeth, or learning spanish, I thought to myself "why cant we learn something useful??". Would have been far better to walk into a class to be met with "right you lot, this is a combustion engine, and this is how it works", not even just relating to mechanics, but other basic shit like "here's how you plaster a wall/ fault find when the electrics go out in the house/ lay a carpet" etc etc, and it's getting worse.

I am an engineer and was in the library today and overheard a conversation on a mobile phone. A man was telling his other half how to inflate her tyres at a petrol station whilst another man listened in and applied jizz to his cheesy wotsits.
When the first man said to use the gauge on the pump to read the pressure I almost died at his stupidity and left without making eye contact. Everybody knows only to use their own calibrated pressure gauge to check pressure and not the inaccurate and none maintained one on the supermarket machines Sad

Because the machine has a step by step pictured diagram showing you exactly how to use it. If you need to know your tyre pressures then looking on the tyre itself a logical first step (it'd be the max pressure but it's somewhere you might think of looking...) then the manual or a plate on the car (you'd know that exists unless you've never owned a car before).

I agree with the people who say mobile phones breed ignorance and stupidity, why is there any need to learn and take responsibility or use your initiative when there's always a phonelist of people to take over for you. How can you ever be capable and self sufficient if you are never truly on your own.

I think it's the same as people who rely on Sat Nav to take them places, and then they complain when they get lost, or turn into fields and equally daft places...because Sat Nav said to.

Could be worse - I had to call Bendy (being some one I knew who was a knowledgeable car style person with a not too dissimilar VW) from a petrol station to ask how to open the fuel cap on my Passat!

To be fair, it was actually the central locking that was locking it, but with a dead battery and never having had a central locking car before I was reasonably confused.

I have myself and seen plenty of others riding bikes with very low pressure - it's quite obvious when you jump on a sports bike with low pressures, but if it gradually goes, it's easy to not notice.

When I used to read Loaded or FHM they had a section about stupid things girls say. I always meant to send this incident in:

Do you know the Body Worlds exhibition? It is basically this weird German guy who takes bodies that are donated to him then uses his own proprietary technique to preserve the bodies in a bunch of artistic poses. So you get corpses doing archery, or riding a preserved horse with their body projected out in a strange way. I won't link to it but you can Google for it if you don't know it.

Anyway, the exhibition is weird enough, but perhaps the most controversial bit is the pregnancy and human development section. iirc they have a cross-section of a preserved pregnant woman with the baby inside her.

In that section they also had a series of cross-sections of foetuses at different stages of development, right up to full size baby. So this is sections - as in slices cut in profile.

I'm looking at this and ahead of me is a guy and his girlfriend. The girl turns to her boyfriend and asks quite loudly, "oh, are they all from the same baby?"

The guy was stunned in to silence... until he looked at me and we both burst out into laughter. It took her a second to realise how stupid her question was. Laughing
