 |

My friends recently told me his horror stories at college in the winter. Apparently when it reaches the ice age at Nov-Feb he has to bump start his bike almost every day to get it going afer college?!
Is this the case for most of them? If so I think i'll have to retire it in the winter I don't mind letting it warm up but I'm not running with it everyday trying to bump it. He had to bump it on 6th one time to get it chuffing, he must of had to run bloody fast.
His was a 50 and mines a 125, will that make any difference at all or will it be just as difficult? I could go start it up on my breaks so it doesn't totally freeze over for 6 hours straight, but it's hardly practical and I will look like a complete twat retiring to the car park twice a day to rev my engine...

No, that isn't normal. A healthy 2-stroke engine should start even when it's very cold. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Bump starting a 125 2 stroke is pretty easy, it can be nearly done at walking pace. But as others of said, it should be fine starting anyway, I would be more concerned about keeping it clean! Road salt wont do it any favours.
Why are we talking about winter anyway! summer is nearly here ____________________ 2016 Honda Africa Twin

Hi,
i uised my rs & mito through the winter, when temps went down to minus 16.
no problems. a couple of times i lost the ability to use brakes though as i went past being "cold", past "numb" & went to the "im staying in 4th, at 40mph & i hope i dont have to brake suddenly or i'll be dead" stage.
really should have fitted they heated grips.
i did take it easy when it was snowing though.
no revving the tits of it then....(different now though )
actually 2 of the rs's i have owned have been c*nts to bump.
to the point where i had to push them up a steep bridge (Stirling bridge, where william wallace or was it mel gibson? went nuts at the English army) at the end of my road & wait till i reached about 20mph before i could get it started (in 2nd)
whereas the mito can be pushed off with my feet & it starts-go figure?
im too old for that now, i just lift the tank & atach the jump start pack, f*cking handy!
cheers,
GAZ |

Theoretically if it was minus a lot degrees C and you jumped on a cold two stroke with large pistons say a CR500 and ragged it you could get a "cold seizure" where the piston expands with heat a lot faster than the bore and jams in the bore.
Never heard of it happening though and I grew up in Yorkshire. |
