When tapping a 5mm thread and a 6mm thread into aluminium which respective drill sizes should I use?

go down 1mm on both
its actually 4.2 for a 5mm but 4 is fine

M5 = 4.2mm drillbit
M6 = 5mm drillbit

Just look on the side of the tap and if it says M5 X 0.8 then 5-0.8 = 4.2mm , M6 X 1.0 then 6-1= 5mm etc

Here's a good guide I've found easy to remember. Only a guide tho. You subtract the the thread pitch from the bolt size you want. Eg m6x1.25. So you would drill 4.75mm. I think the equivilent is 4.8mm.

This is correct for all iso threads, that is any thread with a 60 degree angle on the thread profile . so for any metric or ba thread subtract the pitch from the diameter.
