The chance of you getting caught are incredibly remote.

Unless you have a serious accident, then you'd better grab the KY for the Police.

Honestly even if the risk of getting caught is like 1%, its still worht keeping it in just in case!

I mean honestly, I've rode the DRZ with the restrictor in AND out! there isn't much of a difference at all.

It's up to you.

Since I've been on the forum, I've heard of two people being done for it.

don't i,
48hp at the crank = not much more than 33 at the back wheel,
if ever asked just say, that the bike isnt more than 33hp at the wheel straight from the factory,
no one is going to dyno test it after you have crashed the bike, Thumbs Up

The law doesn't say where the 33bhp is measured though. Wink

They took the carbs from my Thundercat when I crashed to check if they had restrictors in.

I'd assume they'd do the same with the DRZ, or something similar, I haven't even got my carbs back yet!

I believe the law says "Net power output", which I'd interpret as being from the engine, however, as 'net' means minus overheads etc when it comes to income it could mean including all weight and trasmission losses. Wink.

However, definitely arguable and incredibly vague!

Any chance you can remember any threads about this? I find the whole thing quite interesting being on a restricted licence myself.

exactly, when was the last time you saw a dyno that measured anything from the crank? Very Happy

no where does the law state how the bike has to be restricted.
you could put a screw in the throttle grip to stop you twisting the throttle all the way,
and that would still be considered legal.
if you ever got pulled and were required to provide a dyno print out,
or if the police started getting silly and started crusing about with a mobile dyno, it would be stupidly easy to just twist in the screw and pass a dyno run under 33hp

Show me where in the law is says it has to be measured on a dyno?

They could simply go on manufacturer's claimed bhp figure.

(Also bear in mind some dynos can work out the crank bhp by calculating the losses being occured within the drive train.)

i didnt say there was a law, i said if they were to measure it,
which incidentally i have never heard the police doing,
but if they did want to prove you were over 33hp that would be the only way to do it,
unless they can just use the force like yoda and just know that you are over 33hp

You'll be lucky for a stock DRZ400sm to make 35bhp at the wheel. It may actually come up as 33 in stock trim depending on the individual bike

That's fucking stupid. You could have had a throttle stop and they would have said it's not restricted? Confused

I've always wanted to see if they will make a bike restrict to 33bhp through the computer. Like the gay button you get on all the new bikes.

Mmm, they could simly dismantle your bike and check for any form of restriction. If non is present then they simply take the manfacturer's claimed figure...

Well, they had the bike for ages in their lockup so I assume they checked that, if I would have told them that they'd have checked it I imagine.

I just told them I wasn't restricted, as I wasn't.

That honesty saved me 6 points. Thumbs Up.

on the note of restriction i rode around for my restriction period restricted for all of two months before i was clipped by a car that moved into my lane on the motorway.

I saw him coming, moved over as far to my right as i could and throttled on, however there was a 4x4 in my right hand lane so had nowhere to go. I tried to out accelerate the car coming into my lane and almost made it but he caught the end of my exhaust making the rear wheel skip.

If i hadn't been restricted i'd have easily been off in the distance, if not slightly aggited, hwoever the bike wouldnt have been hit.

Having extra power isn't necceserily a bad thing, but i dare say 33bhp is the absolute minimum you should have on a motorway - and that doesnt necceserily allow you to be as safe as possible.

Although my bike was just a diversion 600 with a claimed 60bhp at the crank the bike was a hell of alot nicer to ride without the washers in the manifolds, the engine breathed better, it revved more nicely and it actually had a little power.

Restircted i struggled to get beyond 80mph, unrestricted i struggled to get much more than 105mph so a bit of difference but i found taking a pillion restricted was hard work.

0-60 would be 8-10 seconds and thats just 20 stone between us, top speed of 75. unrestricted top speed of 90 but 0-60 in about 5-6 seconds.

i didnt get caught and didnt have any run ins so i dont know if it would have been checked, and county durham is quite a nice county due to its lack of traffic policing hwoever i did get away with it and covered about 10,000miles in that time through many different counties and police 'hot-spots'.

make what you want of that - saying that i dont ride aggressively or particularly fast, the bike was a sports tourer and i regularly had panniers so im unsure i was a target for police!

Attitude is a big part of it aswell. Dont ride around like a twat, dont have a small numberplate or loud exhaust which will draw attention to yourself, and if doing long motorway journeys or riding at night wear high-vis. Give as little reason to pull you over as possible and give out a good impression.

Confused still no closer to making a decision, as for the loud exhaust and small plates, well it comes with an arrow exhaust on Confused and im not bothered by plate sizes, i just stick to standard and maybe change the hanger ( the drz hanger is hideous) but i use legal carriers ( E marked and all that jazz)

Thom did the rozzers not check your bike when you got knocked off, that hit and run jobby?
