Rust

Being a bike noob, I'm not too sure of what to do in regards to rust.

Little patches are appearing on bolts and metal, on the frame etc.. and I'm about to give the bike a good clean and get some ACF-50 to cover it with.

Am I right in thinking it's best to wire wool off the rust, clean, dry, coat in ACF-50?

The rims had spots of rust all over, but they rubbed off okay, apart from a small patch which had seemingly attacked the chrome, so I couldn't remove it.

The front disc brake, the shiny bit where the brake.. brakes, that's fine, but the outside has rust and in other places too.

Spoke nipples are rusty, spokes have a bit etc..

Would I be able to remove most of it using the above method and maintain a relatively rust-free bike from now?

Any tips/things to look out for or things to avoid?

depends how far you want to go. wire wool is the easiest option which should work fine unless there is some serious amount of rust.
large amounts of rust would require something a bit more heavy duty like a wire brush attachment to a drill or an electrolysis bath

Don't spray ACF-50 on the brake discs or the pads

You could also use WD40, but again don't get any on the discs or pads.

If you have a handful of small rusty bits that need cleaning. soak them for a day or so in pickling vinegar..

you can buy stronger stuff from halfords etc. its usualy a mixture of phosphoric and nitric acid.

as sugested wire brushes in a drill are pretty good..

you could also use a "wire cup" brush fitted to an angle grinder

these usualy cost about £5 ish from machinemart etc.

the next most serious measure is sand and shot blasting but only for heavy rust on substantial structures.
