I was wandering what else is covered on a motorcycle service since I already changed the oil/oil filter and put a K&N filter on the bike last year but wasn’t brave enough to take it apart to change the plugs.

So I was wandering what else I should be checking or would be checked if I booked it into a garage for a service?

Look in the front of your Haynes manual, different things are required at different mileages. For example on most bikes after 16k valve clearances have to be checked. That's the biggy

Depends on the bike, it can be done yourself, it's the time that it takes to do that's expensive because it means taking so much apart, I think.

My 16000 mile service for the bandit cost £180 (that was back in 2007). It is getting due for the 30000 service( I reckon that will cost £250).

When I service my bike it gets oil, oil filter, plugs, (check air filter/replace) clean and check brakes, I do the above every 5000/6000 miles Thumbs Up

Yup, the valves are a 5 minute check
Unfortunately (on the hormet at least) they are at the bottom of the engine, so it needs practically taking apart to get to them

Random list of other stuff is:
Lube / oil moving parts and cables
Plugs like you mentioned
Fluid change (coolant, brake fluid, clutch fluid, forks etc etc)
New Cables / pipes (Clutch, throttle, brake lines etc etc)
Brake Pads

Like was said they will have set periods that they should be replaced, but as part of the Pre Ride checks you should be checking most things for wear anyway. Especially brake lines and brake pads

Most of it is easy to do yourself, just make sure you have the correct tools before you start. Depending where the plugs are get the correct tool, as if like on the hornet 2 will be nearly under the frame, so very hard to get to with standard plug removal tools. Smile

Your bike owners manual might say what needs to be done when, if not get a Haynes manual for it.

Other thing you could try is calling up your bike manufacturers local dealership and asking them to e-mail over a list of what they'll do in a service for your bike. Sometimes this is available on their website.

Grendel, why don't you ask Dan to do a service for you (from Thornhill)...he has always done my car and bike servicing, will even get the parts cheap from his contacts at Halfrauds. Thumbs Up

Do you guys really do that, like really often?

Pre-ride checks?
I think I read about that once in a Haynes manual.

I dont know who Dan is?
But i am looking for somewhere trusted and sympathetic to old bikes to get it serviced since may as well get it done properly if the tank is coming off for new plugs.

lmfao.

its a 5 minute check on a single cyl. 4 stroke with no fairings.

anything else and it takes a bit longer than that.

btw, are you from australia? i heard everything there was upside down.

I guess it will take a while to get to them on my old transalp then Laughing
