I've recenty started commuting on my C70, instead of using the van, or a bigger bike. I do this because it costs me peanuts to run.

Car drivers, and bike riders treat me completely differently.

I can be doing 45 in a 40, and people will overtake me very closely. Bikes will overtake me at inappropriate places. If I'm parked next to another bike, and the owner comes over, they will blank me.

You superficial bastards!

I must admit, you do seem to get a lot more respect on a 'big' bike. I dont miss the days of being treated like shit on 50/125 at all.

As a rider all L's I know the feeling, most car drivers automatically assume your to be passed by whatever means no matter what the risk to you, big bike riders often look at you with distain and take fun whizzing past as close as they can even when your not holding them up. there's very little road courtesy or respect anymore.

This is true.

Cant believe I spent 2 years riding there daily without experiencing death.

I ride usually between 75-85mph...and often find that van drivers in particular, will decide to overtake, then they cut in too soon, then often start braking. It just doesn't make sense! I wonder do they see red mist (possibly after being trounced by every other biker on the road) and just have to be in front of me no matter what, and then just cannot maintain the speed?

I just re-overtake and shake my head, think 'w@nker'... and open it up a bit, to put a bit of distance between us.

It's bizarre behaviour though. Confused

I don't really have any more nonsense from car drivers when I'm on the 100 than when I'm on the Bandido, the Gyp or any other large motorcycle. Completely different story with people on bikes - who mostly sail by looking all superior on their power rangermobiles and feel the need to overtake even when it's dangerous to do so Laughing

Being a London'er and one of them annoying people who never breaks speed limits means it doesn't matter if i am on push bike, car or motorbike, EVERYONE wants me dead >.>

Only difference between now and my 14 years of cycling through the city, i cant just move over to let the really homicidal ones pass so easy.... Bah so much for being safe when sticking to speed limits.

Had a read of the FAQ's here and thought leathers were a safer option rather than for insecure folk Embarassed

I've recently started using my bicycle quite a lot and it's a nightmare. Nearly got taken out by a bus a couple of days ago overtaking me.

On the scooter i was treated like shit, on the VTR things and other bikers get the fuck out of my way, even when i'm not on a hoon.
Its nice to have respect and i use it well. If theres other bikers about i'm on my best behaviour tbh.

If you're going to get smashed to bits, it'll happen, leathers or not. Leathers only really offer protection when you're sliding. Frontal impact with hard objects will crunch bits of you, if you're unlucky.

It's not so much leathers per se that are worn by the insecure, it's the really loud ones Laughing Power rangers on Lego bikes just crack me up, I can't help it Embarassed

I've been conducting an experiment this week, giving the friendly nod/wink at both bikes and scooters (or rather their riders), and the scooters uniformly didn't nod back. Sure they were probably looking out for cyclists, cars, pedestrians, bikes, vans, lorries, and the occaisional flaws in Sheffield's silky smooth stretches of tarmac.

I was hoping for some form of detente, but it may well be an bridgable chasm. Sad

About the c70.. Every day this week on my way home from the work, I have seen a guy on one. No L plates so maybe like you, he is just commuting.

I have yet to get a nod back from him Sad I like seeing people riding unusual/uncommon bikes.

I do get more nods on 'proper' bikes, but it often feels the way bikes are treated is half the way the riders expect to be treated.

As for cars, I don't think I find a massive difference be it on a 125 or a 1000cc bike. For bikes, well I ride for the sake of riding, not in the hope some random strangers nod to me Wink.

Though, I did pull up next to a c70 the other day on a push bike and he didn't even look at me. Superficial bastard! Razz

I always treat other bikes much better than I 'treat' cars - however I don't have a problem with people passing me closly whatever bike I'm on - providing it's done safely and I do mean 'safely', not "oh that was scary because I'm on a small bike and scared of going fast so it must be unsafe" Razz.

The GSX gets little respect as it's old and looks past it's best.

Depending on the road, I either drop a gear and open up the bike which results in a nice bang or pull over slightly to let them blast past if i'm near a known speed trap. Constantly looking in the mirrors in an obvious manner sometimes works too.

Don't have all that much to say about the rest of the post. A bike is a bike.

But I dislike this apparent faux pas about bikes overtaking bikes without 'consent' or 'appropriateness'. If another biker overtakes you and gets past cleanly, it's not inappropriate. Personally speaking, I'll take the decision to overtake another bike consistently, irrespective of the bike in question.

I keep changing my lane position all the time in a bid to be seen by other road users. Scooter or tourer, it works for me. I am talking about dual carriageways tbh as I use A41 and A1 a lot.
In London I am over-cautious and arrogant. I also beep every 20 seconds or so. Sometimes with no reason what so ever Embarassed
