Hi,

My front brake is constantly applied, making a slight screeching sound. I just bought the bike and the seller told me it's because the brake pads are brand new (which they are) and that it will go away. But I've ridden the bike 40 miles since then and there's no improvement.

Should I just wait some more and do some hard braking or is it a sign that there's something wrong with the calliper?

All help is appreciated.

Are the brakes binding badly?

You may need to clean the pistons if the seller just put the new pads in without giving them a clean.

My front brake rubs a little when I push the bike, a bit of resistance, but I was told this was normal with all bikes/disc brakes. ?

my front brakes make a sort of scratching noise if i lift the front wheel off the ground and spin it, still gets 4 or 5 rotations before it stops, brake disc is only warm to the touch and still stops well, does it do it while you ride? how loud is it?

I suggest you take the caliper off, remove the pads, move the pistons out and give them a clean (brake cleaner or WD40) dont get WD40 on the discs or pads.

Push the pistons back in and replace pads (if pads are shiney then give then a gentle rub on a paving flag to get the shine off) then reattach the caliper(s).

Allright, but the bike only has about 700 miles on it, can the pistons really need cleaning? The bike has been stationary in a garage at the police since march '08, could something have dried up or similar?

More reason to clean the pistons if the bike has been stood for that long. I would also change the brake fluid (if it has not already been done) Thumbs Up

There is your problem right there, it was stood far too long. I have the same thing happening on the trike. Listen to Pax on this one, his advise is spot on.

Check the caliper and make sure you can see a little bit of the pistons poking out. If you can't that might suggest the pads are the wrong ones.
