I know it sounds obvious rich but have you tried just removing a spark plug and putting it in a cap, resting it on the engine and seeing if there's a spark when it's cranking?

So you have a spark? That points to a fuelling problem, which is a common thing on the 400 bandit.

See if the plugs are getting wet (after the starter's been turned a few times and then the plugs removed).

You sure your battery's ok? Tried jumping it off a car battery or bump starting it?

How long have you owned it? Has it been sat? Definately enough fuel in the tank? Tried reserve?

Rich, just to confirm, do you actually SEE a spark when you crank the engine with a loose plug in a cap?

Right.

The sidestand relay sends power to the kill switch. This in turn passes power to the starter button, and the ignitor.

If it is turning, then there's nothing wrong with the Ignition switch, sidestand switch, sidestand relay or kill switch.

That leaves wiring to the ignitor or coils, or faulty ignitor, or faulty signal generator.

To check the ignitor wiring pull the plug from the ignitor and put a meter on the Orange and White wire. You should have 12V there with the ignition and kill switch on.
If you have no voltage there but the engine will crank when you hit the starter button you have a wiring fault.
If you have voltage there you should check the connectors aren't green and rotted. Check also the terminals in the ignitor. Best bet is to take photos of both and post them here.
To check the coil wiring put a volt meter on each of the orange wires feeding the coils. Should be 12v there directly from the ignition switch.

If the terminals look ok you should test the signal generator. The connector you can find by removing the seat and left air cleaner cover. Unplug the connector and measure the resistance of the sensor (brown wire and black with blue tracer wire). The serviceable range is 80-120 ohms.

Do all this and see where you get mate Thumbs Up

quite likely to be a dodgy pulse coil (signal generator as pete has said)

Also a common problem but bit off topic, have you connected all the HT leads and caps to the right cylinder of each spark plug?

sometime the mmarkings on the leads get rubbed off and you end up putting the leads on the wrong plug for that cylinder

cheers

Is this a variable valve bandit 400? If so there's also an ignitor relay (not the CDI) under the pillion seat on the right hand side of the frame (take the tail unit off). If this is broken the plugs won't spark.

If it is the VV model as metioned then when you turn the ignition on you should hear an audible click from said relay. When you turn the ignition off you should hear it click (if I remember the time correctly) 3-8 seconds after.

ive found that a wire that goes into the fuse box dosent look very gd and the bit where the connectors goes into the fuse box looks abit expanded(on the fuse box) i did have a problem on the day the bike stopped that the fuse that that particular wire goes into the plastic on the fuse melted so im hopin this wire could be the problem im sorry for sounding so stupid i love bikes and yes this is my 1st as u can tell Embarassed

Make sure the correct size of fuse has been used - it sounds like someone has replaced the fuse in the past with a higher rated one. You're going to have to find out what that wire is for/where it goes etc and split the loom to repair/replace it.

Is the fabric red?

I can't remember what this wire is but I seem to remember it taking a feed from the battery via the starter relay to the fuse box. If so this is the main power source for the bike.... so definately needs to be looked at.
