pc sleep mode

Pc turns on, monitor starts up then goes into sleep mode...

So far I've made sure the tower internal are dust free ( fans/boards etc, haven't knocked anything and everything is plugged and connected ) also tried another pc to monitor cable and still no joy.

I'm assuming the monitor isn't receiving the signal to power up, if that's the case what would be the likely cause ?

It worked last night as normal, this morning it's been as above.

Any ideas ?

does the bios show up?
do you have another screen?
do you have another graphics card you could pinch for a second?

The screen doesn't light at all apart from ' Fujitsu Siemens systems ' then the blue ' on ' light turns Orange, tried another screen, same thing, no access to another graphics card at present.

Does your motherboard have onboard graphics, or is it an external card only?
If it has, it's possible your bios has defaulted to the onboard - if so, try the other connector, or try tapping whatever key that enters the bios on boot up - usually delete or F10.
Also try completely removing and reseating the external card.

If all this fails, it's most likely that your graphics card has failed.

I had this exact same problem a little while ago with my Dad's PC, it was the graphics card which had failed. I always keep a box of obsolete/junk pc components that i've removed from other PCs when i've upgraded them.(loads of old pci and agp graphics cards etc) So i popped round with another card and just replaced it. He only uses his PC for very basic stuff (web-browsing and word processing), so he doesn't notice the difference.

The pc is a Fujitsu Siemens that was new out of the box around six years ago, and the main bit of info I can gleam from the rear is scaleo P GA-81848pm if that means anything to any body ?

Not sure if that's the Mother board, graphics card or something else entirely though as like I said pc internals aren't my bag...

The Scaleo P is the Fujitsu model name for the 'whole' PC.
The GA-81848 is the main board, manufactured by Gigabyte.

From what i can glean, that series of mainboard did not feature onboard graphics, instead it uses an AGP graphics card.

(AGP is very basically the kind of 'slot' that the card fits into.)

I would recommend getting a cheapie from eBay or similar, this link will show you some of them. Failing that, a local PC spares shop might have a few old AGP cards in stock that they'll let you have for cheap.

Might be worthwhile taking your video card out and comparing the style of connector to the ones in the eBay adverts before you part with your money.

Any idea on which one would be the graphics card ?...

I think I have an idea but I'm not sure, would it be the one that clips in and out and not ( I'm assuming ) screws in/fixed in ?...

I know that's a stupid question without you being able to see it but I thought I'd ask...

Your monitor will plug into the back of your graphics card.

Type "fitting graphics cards" (or similar) in to youtube, that'll give you an idea of what they look like.

Here is a picture of a similar Gigabyte mainboard:

In this picture, the lime green 'slot' is the AGP slot where your graphics card fits in.
The other 5 large slots are PCI slots, note how they are a different size and shape from the AGP slot.
Note also that the AGP slot has a little white lever on it, this locks onto a little tab on the graphics card.

Note the little 'L' shaped green tab at the bottom of the card, this is what helps to lock the card in place.

Usually, the AGP card will be held in place by that locking tab and a single screw which secures it to the PC case.

To remove the card: find the screw and remove it, push the locking lever down on the mainboard, the card should now come out. It may require a bit of a wiggle (technical term) to free it from the slot. If it doesn't come out too easily, start looking for something else which is holding it in place.

What we're looking at in this pic is the front of the card where the connectors are - you should recognise the blue 'D' connector as being the same as where you plug your monitor cable in.
To the left of the blue monitor connector (known as a VGA socket), the other side of the 2 yellow connectors can you see where the metal bends at 90 degrees? This is where you will find the screw which holds the graphics card to the PC chassis.
(Note, you might not have the yellow connectors, but your card will pretty much definitely have that bend and screw hole).

If you're buying from the t'interwebs, post a link of the replacement card you're buying and we'll be able to tell you if it's suitable.

Before spending money, there are a few things you can try. I would reset the CMOS - should be a little jumper point on the motherboard that you short for 10 seconds or so whilst the PC is off, then unshort it again (use a key or something conductive to bridge the 2 pins). Also try simple stuff like taking out the RAM and any cards and blowing out the slots in case a bit of dust has got in and is preventing proper contact being made. Also, something may have been dislodged enough to stop it booting and reseating all the cards will help with this.
