SV650s Brake disc's. Should I be worried?

On Friday a friend of mine bought a W reg SV650s.

The place he bought it from said they did a full MOT and service.

Today at squires, he asked me if his caliper should move when he pulls the lever. I told him yes because they are 'floating'

I showed him, but as I did the outside of the disc moved freely from the inside. Slightly alarmed by this I tried the other side. The same thing happened. Then on mine.
I then tried the rivets, they spin freely too.

Is this safe?

Do you mean the discs are spinning in the same plane as the wheel? or that they move side to side?

I think I get what you mean, my GS's front disk is pretty similar, it alarmed me when I could hear the disk clicking when I was on the front brake fairly hard, spooked me enough that I didn't touch that front brake lever again till I'd had a few words with a couple of mechanics

It's down to wear on the rivets afaik.

I would have thought that or the seat the rivets sit in. Either way the bike was bought 4days ago. And tonight after a run to squires and back 150miles. It would not start so another problem.

Should said friend return the bike 50mile away or get local garage to look at it?

Basically i'm trying to either stop him from killing himself or looking a muppet.

The standard SV650 discs have no notable 'float'. Are the discs standard SV ones or after-market ones like the wavy ones you drew on above?

I have seen some discs (not SV650 standard ones) that flap about a fair bit, so wouldn't be too concerned as long as it isn't a standard SV disc and a quality aftermarket make. But if it is a cheap replacement disc, the bobbin bits or the hub part of the disc might be made of cheap stuff are probably pretty worn ...

A small amount of play in a stock or quality disc I wouldn't be concerned about ... if it is a cheap aftermarket disc, then it might be ok right now, but if it has worn that quickly it could continue to get worse to the point it is a problem (the bobbing would have to be VERY worn for this to happen mind-ewww) ....

As above, if it is a fully floating aftermarket disc then I wouldn't worry too much. If it is a standard SV disc though they shouldn't really have any play in them what so ever.

5mm sounds rather a lot of play. My Bimota disks are fully floating and do have a fair amount of play, but even they don't have that much.

Those rivets should spin, and the disk should have slight side to side movement. I.e across the bike in the same direction as the handlebars travel.

But not much movement.

I used to have a Laverda triple fitted with Brembo 300mm 'full-floaters' which rattled side-to-side from new and was ok but fore and aft slop meant that they were knackered and needed replacing. Invest in a couple of new ones my mate, you've only got one life.
