Just checking if an oil like:

https://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_263777_langId_-1_categoryId_165507#dtab

Will be fine for my 1988 CBR 400?
Now if i'm changing the oil would it be best to get more than just 1 litre? I'm not sure how much the engine holds.

Cheers

If that is the correct grade as listed in your manual/found online (i.e. 10w/40) then yes that will be fine. You will need considerably more than 1l though, somewhere around 3-4 litres I would imagine.

Edit: just checked it is the correct grade Thumbs Up .

Yes it's 10w 40 the engine uses.
I only drained out just under one litre and put back in one full litre, it's just about at the right level, may have to get some more though just to be safe

Hi

No way should a CBR400 only have 1 litre of oil in it. Only figure I can find is 3.4 litres for a later CBR400RR

If 1L is all it has taken to get it back up to the full mark then that suggests you didn't drain all the old oil out.

All the best

Keith

Are you checking the oil level while the bike is sat up right ? ie not on the side stand.

The new filter alone will hold about 300 ml, no chance in hell the whole bike takes 1 l !!!!!!!!!

When you took the drain plug out how long did you wait? If the bike was leaning away from the drain plug or you had it on a centre stand when you drained then you could potentially not have emptied it all off...

Something like the pic attached Thumbs Up .

Either way, a lot more than 1 l should come out.

After you have drained and refilled by the correct amount, remember to check and top up after running the engine for a bit to take into account the oil used to fill the filter.

Right oil but damned expensive. Granted I get some staff discount but I can get four litres for not much more than 20. No wonder they call in Halfrauds.

Asda have 2ls of 10w40 on 3 for £10. I had a quick look at the back of the bottle and the ratings are the same A3/B3 iirc.

Yes but is is semi synthetic, you can get ordinary 10w40 intended for cars cheaply but it'll not last in a bike gearbox, lose grade and be useless really after not too long. I learned that hard way, a semi synthetic is the minimum you need, even one not listed as for bike use. I've used that for years, although not much cheaper than proper bike oil saves a few quid which you need to do when you have about a tenner a week to run your bikes on.

Found this which backs up what everyone has said about the oil capacity of been 3.4 litres.

"First manufactured in 1988 the Honda CBR400RR, or 'BabyBlade', is the smaller sibling of ... The CBR400RR engine was a development from that of the CBR400 Aero, ... Engine oil capacity at oil filter change - 3.4 litres"

I'm looking at the bottle now, it quite clearly says semi synth on it. The only oil you need to avoid in bikes is one with friction modifiers (magnatec, mpg improving kind of stuff) cos it balls the clutch up.
