What is this part? :/

Hi guys, recently removed the back tyre for the first time in order to get a puncture fixed at a shop.

All went quite well, except when I removed the thing from the side of the tyre/bike, on the opposite side of the sprocket.. a little thing fell out as I carried it into the garage with all the other bits.

It's a Honda XR125.

I've circled the main thing I think it fell off as I carried it away from the bike:

And here's a crude drawing of the part. It's pretty small, a few cm long/wide with a hole through the middle, cylindrical a bit. :

I don't have pics as it's at a friends (closest to me at time of puncture). Going to pick up tyre now shortly so hopefully someone will clue me in before I get sorted and mess this up.

I'm guessing that it is the part that connects the brake actuating lever to the rod from your rear brake pedal.

if you could get a picture of the part im sure it would jog my memory. try the sticky thread for the workshop manual. there is one but it is in Spanish. shouldn't matter though because you just need the pictures

If it's the bit off the brake rod, it's called a brake trunnion.

Managed to put the wheel back on and rode home without killing myself. Accomplishment +1.

You should have had either one odd-shaped nut or a pair of normal nuts on the brake rod that went through that trunnion. Since you didn't recognise it I'll run you through the adjustment process that I use.

If you had one special trunnion nut with a larger hex and a half-round cutout that fitted against the trunnion, then you lift the rear wheel off the ground and wind the trunnion nut over and over the 'lumps' until you feel the wheel binding as you turn it by hand AFTER it has hit, then back off the trunnion nut until there is no drag at all. Finally test the system by turning the wheel with one hand and repeatedly pressing the footbrake with the other to make sure it runs freely when it releases each time.


If you had two normal nuts then wind the first one on whilst turning the wheel by hand. When you feel it starting to bind back off the nut two turns and check the wheel's not binding. Now run the second nut up to the first and lock them together to stop them loosening off. Now check the wheel for brake binding again.
