Does anything else work - horn, lights?
It sounds like a bad earth which is OK with light load such as your dash lights but when more power tries to flow the connection gives up.

In a way that makes it easier because there's a general problem with the entire electrics rather than a hard to pin down issue with the starter or switches that stop starter working like on the sidestand.
First thing to check is that you have a really good earth between battery negative and frame.
If you have or can borrow a decent pair of jump leads you can bypass or augment the existing black wire - connect onto some bare metal and see if it will go then.
