Other than the obvious security issues, are there any legal reasons why I couldn't bypass my ignition completely and wire it into a switch of some sort? And would the bike still go through an MOT.

Can't see why you couldn't put a kill switch of your own on there, and all you've got to do at mot time is make sure it's in the On position...

hi,
i ran about on an rs125 for about 9 months with no ignition switch.
i just wired in a on/off toggle switch & hid it in at the back of the frame.
never did me any harm.
though i dont know about the mot, doesnt the steering lock have to work?

thanks for the reply's, I've been looking for one but there all about 70 quid and I'm not paying that so I figured I'll run it like that until I can find one second hand just wasn't sure about MOT

hi,
you can buy a 12v 15amp switch from halfrauds for about 3 or 4 quid, then just splice it into your ignition switch wiring.
i presume you mean an actual ignition costs around 70 quid?
try wemoto or somewhere similar for a pattern one,

I did that on one of my old GPZ500s. Fitted a nice flick-switch on the fairing in place of the ignition switch.

Thinking about it. I also did this on my old CB125, mounted the switch in the top of the headlamp shell.

Just be aware that on most bikes these days, the switch doesn't just do one thing. It usually makes one circuit and breaks another in each position. As such, a simple on-off switch wont do the job. You'll need a six termainal switch.

I did that on an old MG I had.
I dropped it off at a mates for some paintwork doing, they struggled all day to figure out how to start it.
switch was on the dash but looked like the switch for the interior map light.

yep do it, ive just done it to my 125.. tit lost the keys
only problem i had was petrol cap...but my gs500 key fits it

I think I will, the bike had no ignition when I bought it, but still got the key so the fuel cap is ok, I have seen a new ignition and fuel cap on ebay for 29 quid but it's from Hong Kong so I'm not sure.
