Whats the conditions of having a dog put down.

We have a jack russel that my mum just 'loves' although im not sure why, as it spends its entire time ripping things up, barking (loud and high pitched) and...as of 15 minutes ago, biting.

im finding it hard to typwe as i have 4 cuts in my hand, which have been bleeding for about 10 minutes and hurt a lot, i was wondering under what conditions it takes to have a dog put down due to it being hostile to humans

Try taking it to obedience classes and so on first.

Killing a dog is a harsh move if your mum loves it so much etc.

Give the thing a chance and get it to some obedience classes and see how it gets on, then take it from there.

Try talking to the vet, they'll be able to give you details of dog training near you which should be able to sort the problem out. If that doesn't work you could give the dog to the RSPCA which is a much better solution than putting it down.

See how the training goes, or you could buy the dog a muzzle? Your vet should be able to give you lots of advice about what to do to sort the problem out.

Getting an animal put down is really a last resort thing, just out of interest how old is the dog ???? as if it young there is a good chance taking to to some classes would help, also having it castrated (sorry guys) can often calm an animal down.

Going to a vet or phoning R.S.P.C.A would be able to offer you advice on what the possible next step would be.

I can't believe this post.

How inconvenient of it to have bitten you. Go and put some dettol on your capaciously bleeding wounds.

Its a Jack Russell, ffs. They ARE highly strung and they DO bark a lot.

But its hardly a rotty or a bull terrier.

It could probably do with some stringent re-training, perhaps, prior to sending it down. It may well have been allowed to be spoilt, if it only lives with your mum. Dogs have a very decisive way of determining pack order, and obviously it has been led to think you are "below" it in the pack.

But put it down?

*tuts, walks off before she gets too mad and loses all concept of improving karma*

Note I did NOT swear in this post.

Ask your mother how to pronounce that, if you have trouble.

As ste said take it to the vet.

I once was bitten by a friends dog, as a result the dog was destroyed (not my choice). Later on it was discovered that the dog had been suffering from a tumour, which the vet said would have made the dog highly aggressive.

it had just grabbed something (dont remember what) so i picked it up (albeit with some force, nothing that would hurt it) and so it bit me several times, i wont bother getting it put down as ive calmed down a bit now, but i really do hate the fucking creature..

oh, and it went to obedience classes, it passed...but its still really bad

Roo-roo, its likely that the dog considers you a lower dog within its own echelon. It may have also considered the object that it had taken "its" article, and not "yours".

Your superiority in the pack mentality needs to be reasserted, regardless of whether the obedience classes gave it gold stars or not. But it might be too late, if its an older dog Sad

The point MarJay made about growling and staring it out will start to reaffirm your superiority, but it MAY make the dog anxious and if it already believes you are a lesser dog, it MAY cause the dog to "shape up" to you, causing further conflict (you might get bitten on the nose next time).

But give it a try.

Its worth remembering that if you ARE going to discipline an already unruly dog, you can't really do it by getting to its own level. You need to stand ABOVE the dog and discipline it. If you are on the floor glaring and growling at it, you are at the same level, and therefore risking an attempt by the dog of its own status-renewal.

A visit to the library or onto a couple of websites for information on dog-whispering behaviour training might be in order (sounds crazy, I know, but its working for mine).

Trust me on this HK is talking sense, and also talking as an animal lover.

Having a dog put down just because you and it have fallen out is NOT a reason. I think that if you have watched todays news the RSPCA have got some good guidelines put through parliment.

How old is the dog, and what is it like with other people???

My parents had a dog that we had to have put down (RIP Sam), he was a wonderful dog for many years and I grew up with him from being a puppy. When he was 11 he went almost totally blind, and the vet said a little senile (half Border Collie with a decaying brain) Sad

. At the same time I went away to college and came back for the holidays, he didn't recognise my voice or smell = I was a stranger in the house until he got to know me after a while. He was a serious danger to me for the first few days!

I wouldn't let them do anything to him.

A few weeks later he started turning on strangers in the street, better that we made the decision than the courts. Sad

Have a good look at the dog AND your lifestyles then think long and hard about it.

My dog used to bite me all the time. Its funny but when ever my parents were around she would just ignore me and follow mum or dad around the house.

Recently my parents have been going on holiday alot and leaving me to look after the dog. Since I looked after her for a few weeks and fed her etc she actually seems to respond to me alot more.

Its the fact that I was the one feeding her food I think and also taking her walks. If you put in the time I think you will find most animals will come to respect you.
