Posted: 12:58 - 16 Jun 2010 Post subject: How to control front wheel slide in a corner? |
 |
|
Just come home for a ride on the Transalp and coming around the last Left hand corner that I’ve been around hundreds of times before the front wheel hit loose gravel on the road and tried to slip away from me mid corner at 20mph. Thankfully I managed to stay upright by kicking out at the road to bring me back up right mid corner which in turn scuffed the toes on the boots and pulled groin muscle but luckily kept me upright.
What is the best way to stay in control in this situation or was it just bad luck hitting grave mid corner? ____________________ Past bike: 2004 Hyosung Comet

As far as I know, there is no way. If the front wheel is sliding you are de facto out of control. You just have to hope you get grip back before it goes down, and when you do that it doesn't send you back over the top.
Generally a loose hand on the controls and neutral throttle can't hurt.
Giving it a bit of gas might help by shifting the weight off the front wheel, but then again, it might make the back break away on whatever made the front do so leaving you in even deeper shit.
Gripping the saddle between both buttocks while going "fuckfuckfuckfuck." is my usual technique.
The good old spider-legs can't really make it any worse so it's worth a try. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

I did mention that maybe professional racers would say they give it some gas, thinking in terms of effectively leaned-over wheelying might save it. But meh, I deleted that bit. Maybe Judge Dredd could pull it off. ____________________ "There's the horizon! Ride hard, ride fast and cut down all who stand in your way!" |

This is what I usually do in the situation you describe. ____________________ See my motorcycle youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/svengalie |
