So, hooligans, I really really really really really want to be able to nail a half decent wheelie!

Power wheelying just doesnt happen on the CBR (i.e. just slamming the throttle on in first at any speed, at any rev) aside from the front going light, and in the case of a pillion being on the back, yes I did a massive minger by accident but that's another irrelevant story.

But on the flipside, I don't want my first attempt at a clutch wheelie to end up with me on my back with the bike flipped, or going way too high and crashing back down.

I've watched a few YouTube vids, and none really seemed to help even though I took what they said away.

My bike is obviously powerful enough, because people use CBR's as stunters all the time.

Help me to wheelie BCF, how do I do it? What is a good way to start practising etc?

Cheers guys, Karma

Best video I know of, I learnt from his earlier vids. But ultimatly your just going to have to go out and practice, if your worried about flipping and damaging your bike then wheelies probably arn't for you. Take it slowly and you'll be fine Wink

Start off accelerating gently, and quickly pulling the throttle in a small amount and letting it out again quickly. Make sure it is only a tiny amount, you only want enough to let the engine revs rise and then dip again.

Make sure you're accelerating smoothly throughout and you should hear the same noise as on the videos, which is just the bike revving up quickly as the clutch is pulled in, then dipping down and struggling under the load as it's snapped out and the front is picked up.

Obviously you won't pick the front up if you just flick the clutch in and out a tiny amount under gentle acceleration, but you'll be able to hear the noise and feel the bike lurch. It's that lurch you want to get comfortable with, and pull the clutch further and further in each time while using more and more throttle. Eventually you'll get to the stage where you're popping the front up a few inches, which means you've mastered the basic technique and you just need to wind it up more!

I'd agree with that, if the last thing going through your head is 'what happens if i drop it, better be gentle' then you'll never do it. You have to be slightly unprecious about your bike.

If you read the guide from G and take it gently then you should be ok. Guess the easiest thing is to practise dropping the clutch, gradually increase power - say 500-1k rpm per attempt, when you're getting near have 2-3 attempts at that power to get used to the feel first.

From there on, it's only a matter of time before you'll be on the back wheel of a 98 R1 knocking off car wing mirrors by slapping them with your wang.

You need balls to do wheelies, if you dont have them no ammount of guides will help you wheelie.

My CBR600FV is rather easy to wheelie, Infact you can get the front up on power alone... Its keeping it up thats a different issue.

However i have the needle sitting at abour 7-8 thousand RPM rolling along in first gear, clutch in, blip the throttle, pop the clutch... This should bring the front up nicely. But it takes a little getting used to.

You can sustain the wheelie by finding the balance point and covering that rear brake. You need to be fairly confident and smooth with the throttle however, just concentrate on getting the front up first.

My first few attempts had the front bouncing up, down, up down, up down.... As i rolled off the throttle and back on. Heh, as I say it takes a little getting used to.

But for starters just accelerate in first gear and as you are about one third through the powerband, clutch in and blip the throttle and pop it... This should bring the front up for a few seconds while you accelerate.

Be careful and take care. Don't be overly enthusiastic or anything.

Forget it. Only cretins wheelie on the road. Nothing ruins a perfectly good gearbox/chain/sprockets like popping wheelies in a vain bid to prove you're cool. And if the plod catch you wheelying, may as well chuck your license in the bin.

wheelies arent for me until i buy myself a winter hack i dont mind messing up a bit.

I heard the same thing about people that ride RXS's on the road - knacker the bike that would make a perfectly good shelf in an attempt to prove they're so cool on their old under powered bike Wink.
I've twice been 'stopped' for wheelying and not had much come of it (ok, an ASBO and a the other he just suggested I wheely some where else, after complimenting me on it!).

Believe it or not, so me actually find the challenge of increasing their skills riding bikes to be fun, rather than seeing the bike purely as the most utilitarian form of transport available Wink.

Wheelying is pointless. It serves no purpose. I've had bikes where you just can't keep the front end on the floor under acceleration, but I've never gone out of my way to have the front end up in the air, except off road on trailies, which are built for that kind of nonsense (and are robust enough to withstand being repeatedly dropped, bounced and bashed around).

Why anyone would want to perfect doing wheelies is beyond me. Look what happened to Eddie Kidd when he was showing off Shocked Laughing

Regarding the RXS, I do at least get out there and ride. Properly. Putting serious mileage on the clock, unlike most of the plastic racer brigade Wink

Most bike rides are pointless - you get back to where you started most times.

Many people find the challenge of learning a new skill much more fun, interesting and a more worthwhile pursuit than riding a slow bike for hundreds and thousands of miles of the same roads.

I'm all for learning worthwhile skills. Wheelies aren't worthwhile. You're very likely to end up with your bike battered and broken, or yourself battered and broken. And with something like 9 points on your license if some draconian plod sees you misbehaving.

I don't know why I have this rep for only riding the RXS - I have probably owned more bikes than most people on here. Including some fast/mental/not slow/not commuter ones which I daresay I've ridden in a somewhat less than sedate manner once or twice Laughing

Once I had a Powervalve 350 which had been endlessly wheelied sieze its gearbox solid on me in the middle of the M25 at about 90 and it's not an experience I want to repeat.

There's nothing big or clever about doing wheelies.

Did I mention that I thought wheelies were bit stupid? Laughing

What defines 'worthwhile'? (Rhetorical question - I should point out I don't really care what you think is worthwhile Wink ).
I'm trying to learn to hang glide at the moment. In no way will it ever be 'useful', or 'worthwhile' by your definitions. It's also a sport that can be considerably more dangerous than doing wheelies if you're don't do it with a bit of thought.

You're only likely to end up with yourself or your bike if you're a bit of twat in your approach to it. Maybe this is your issue.
Same to normal riding really, actually.
Could easily get 9 points because a draconian plod took a disliking to you for any reason.

You've got a rep for riding an RXS because you have presented it as a/the defining part of yourself.

There's nothing clever about riding an RXS either and I know I find doing wheelies a hell of a lot more fun!

Here we go again, bashing anyone that wants to do something you don't agree with.

Don't wear protective gear, don't ride fast bikes, don't do wheelies, ect ect...

People do wheelies because they find it fun, people ride fast on fast bikes because its fun. Just because you don't enjoy it, doesn't mean it's something that no body should be doing. I can't wheelie for shit, but I when I can I will be doing it to keep my self amused, its the whole fun of owning a bike, learning new things, having fun! If I damage the bike, injure my self or get points on my licence then its my own fault, but at least I was having fun doing it.

There could be an argument for wheelies/stoppies in bike tests..and backing it in, supermoto style....well kinda Laughing

These are great skills to have, on any bike capable of doing them.

To be able to control the front wheel should it lift over a rise. To apply the maximum braking force and not panic when the rear lifts.
Same goes for the rear when it looses traction in a corner.

Being balanced on your bike gives confidence in many road situations.

I intend to get another dirt bike(trials) and continue my training.
I learnt more about bike control in the 2yrs i had my XL than the rest of the time i've been on the 250RSA.
