Does anybody stick with a 125cc post test?

I am kinda curious, my 125 is nippy, is capable of doing 70 yet never really gets above 50 due to city speed limits. Its cheap as chips to run (about 160 - 180 miles for £7.50 of unleaded). Fairly big and comfy. I've read a few times Yamaha engines just keep going. I am aware of the advantages of having a bigger bike but going for something more powerful would feel like a bit of a waste considering its main use is to get me through 200 miles of London commuting a week.

But except for commuters on scooters, I never really see anyone on 125cc bikes without L plates. Does anybody keep... Well.. Use their 125cc's post test? I don't mean keeping it and leaving it in the garden while something more powerful is ridden. I mean really sticking with 125's for daily use.

I'm planning on keeping mine for a year or so afterward (aiming to do test when we're settled in the new house and instructions a bit cheaper, maybe october) and keep over the winter maybe April before I sell it, reckon I'll get the best price for it that way.

The money saved on petrol & insurance will go a good way towards upgrading.

I never owned a 125, only trained on one. Hated the things, I don't know why you want to stick with one if you had the option of going bigger. Noisy, uncomfortable and not quick enough in my opinion. Plus they're a bit too light so I never felt particularly grounded to the road on any of the 125s I've ridden.

I guess if I lived in London it'd be a different story as you're doing less than 30mph most of the time and will need something small for filtering, but where I am I'm surrounded by NSL roads.

Despite my dislike of 125s, I did debate getting one just to own a bike cheaply after passing my test, but my 400 was actually cheaper to insure than most 125s and gets around 70mpg. So even on the cost issue a 125 wouldn't have saved me much really.

That's just my opinion, plus I personally don't know anyone who's kept using their 125 after passing their test, most is perhaps a couple of months whilst looking for a bigger bike.

Op, is your bike the 4 stroke model or the 2 stroke model ? was going to suggest you get it derestricted if it was the 2 stroke.

I liked my CG125 and kept it after passing my test until it got nicked...then (in London) I got a 50cc bike which I also kept until it got nicked.

Small, light, easy to filter in London and great MPG/tax.

As for people saying they are "light" so don't grip the road as well....

However I eventually moved onto a bigger bike, which is more fun on the open road, but much heavier, wider, harder to filter and generally more work going round London's busy roads.

One unexpected upside is that I ride exactly the same way as I did on my 50cc, but no longer get continually hooted at / aggressively overtaken / cut up!

I rode my CG at least a year and a half after passing. I still own it but it's in the process of getting stripped down and repaired. It will be MOT'd and insured hopefully in the next 3 months.

I've virtually always owned at least one small bike since passing my test in 1986. I've had the venerable RXS100 since 1990 and have ridden it regularly over those two decades.

Most people put appearance and what their peers think over practicality. The RXS is outstanding at getting me about very cheaply and reliably, while being able to tackle the most gridlocked areas with no bother, and even the chav scum don't seem interested in nicking it.

I brought a RXS100 2 years after passing (mainly for the GF but ended up being mine only) and used it for 9 months or so.

Super cheap but what made me want to get rid of it was the lack of respect you got from others and filtering you always seemed to get treated much worse.

As soon as I got the 400 it was amazing how differently I got treated. Probably wouldnt get another <125cc bike again

past my test over a year ago! Im still on my XR125! i can ride anything upto 33bhp but I dont see the need to. Im fine at doing 60mph everywhere and getting 85-90mpg!

The tax is cheap, costs me £100 in insure it! Runs forever on £10 of fuel! I love the handling and I can eat up lots of mines a day on it!

in 14 months Iv clocked up 11,000 miles on my bike!

I dont have any plans to get another bike for a while. i did think about getting a brand new bike just for the sake of having a new bike but as it was pointed out to me, would not of been much of an upgrade!

I find it funny how people are obsessed with how many CC's your bike has!

Im never in much of a rush to get anywhere so speed isnt a problem!

I do feel quite alone here though, everyone else i know jumped on bigger bikes as soon as they past!

I bought a 400 superdream after my test, 6 months later the cam chain went so I dug the 125 out and rode that for a bit. Decided the 125 was more fun so sold the 400 and bought an Aprilia AF1. Still got 125s now, and bought 2 new ones since my test despite owning larger bikes at the time.

I've still got mine, and have ridden it on and off for the past 18 months, but I'm going to SORN it soon, and strip the whole things down for a proper respray and modification.

The temptation to buy a spare camshaft and just see if I can reshape the cams to produce a slightly tastier output is quite high, given the camshaft only costs about £40...
