Updating modem/router firmware

I'm having problems with bandwidth allocation on my router, I'm hoping the new firmware will have something in it for this.

So, I've never updated firmware on anything. Is it straight forward enough ? I've had this router for years and I'm not sure if I still remember my bb password etc. does the update scratch everything ?

Anything I should know and look out for ?

With netgear it's really straight forward. You download the firmware update, go onto the router menu which is 192.168.0.1 (off the top of my head) and then go to firmware update and point it to the file on you computer then it upgrades and restarts then all done.

I've only ever used netgear.

Usually as simple as something within the config pages.

Some can be told to update and they'll fetch the firmware themselves, but most of the routers i've used you need to find and download the firmware yourself first, and then go and upload it to the router via your web browser (again within the config pages).

Then just hope to hell that you don't get a power cut within the next few minutes Wink

Settings are usually wiped, so it would be wise to write them all down, or take a load of screen captures, so that you can put the settings back to how they were if it isn't working right.

Netgear firmware updates do not wipe the config, at least not on any of the routers I've set up. However you didn't specify make. I've done updates on Belkin, Linksys and Zyxel, but to be honest I can't remember if they get wiped or not.

If you want to take a belt and braces approach you should find a utility in the management interface to take a backup of the config. That way you're covered if the update does a factory reset.

Also don't do it over Wi-Fi, hook up some CAT5 and update over Ethernet. Thumbs Up

By bandwidth allocation do you mean a QoS/packet shaping kind of program? If so I can't see a firmware update changing anything.

On our router I find it works better if you set the low priority packets and leave the high priority ones on their own. In my case that basically means BT and FTP down the bottom.

You may find you still experience lag in games with the QoS on anyway due to the number of packets the router has to handle.

Which router is it? there maybe some 3rd party firmware avilable for it.

I use DDWRT on my linksys gear and routertech on my adsl modem
