Batterry Urgent Query ..

Checking bike for brby run, and if i take the batterry plastic tops off, theirs plenty of space until the water ..aerent these chambers supposed to be filled with distilled .. pse advice ..

I have distilled water, bike manual says check and especially in heat ... ta

Also checking with bike on side stand at present .. ta

Take the battery out and see if there's a fill level.

They're supposed to be filled up to a line or marking.

You can just use tap water if you have decent water. Distilled water is better though.

You can buy distilled water in most motor factors but if you are stuck top up with clean rainwater but not tapwater.

The last battery i bought was no where near full to the top when it was filled with the stuff it came with.

But charged fine and still works ok.
Is for a scooter though. No idea if it makes a difference.

Thanks .. going to try it now, also ... i take it i can just top up the radiiator coolant with s bit of water, it's got it's first service in a few weeks .. just don't want to put water in the coolant without asking ..

Least i'm learning the basics ...

IF you buy some distilled or deionised water from a shop
you can top up both the battery and coolant with that.

If the battery does not have hi/lo lines, just make sure the
electrolyte level is above the plates by say 5-6mm
It doesnt need and should not be, full to the brim!

Right, batterry levels fine, theres a ?? in the theory test that thrown me, saying about levels needed to be brimming ...

Si is it now the reverse, in that Red back on first then black .. ??

Also, the rad coolant needs topping up, waters ok for that is it not ... ?

Then there is tyre psi, i have found the amounts stated on the bike sticker, i'm just thinking i weigh nearly two people !!

Says for single person 27 and 28 .. plus you have the weather effects tyre pressures .. ??

Please clarify ... these are things i won't need to ask again, and i'm sure a few noobs would like to know aswell ..

I have as said .. 500 ml distilled of ebay already ...

Not sure about the theory test
we didnt have them when I were a lad
In short.
The electrolyte (dilute sulfuric acid) must cover the plates and you need an air gap between that
and the overflow and filler plugs
Spilt electrolyte will do damage to the bike

Battery Connections

Disconnecting:
Pos then neg
Connecting :
Neg then pos

Coolant
Tap waters often fine but in hard water areas too much may lead to 'furring'
just like in domestic plumbing so that why distilled or rain water is
recommended.
You also need to maintain the ratio of water to anti freeze which also prevents
corrosion usually at say 25%.

Tyre pressures:
As I dont know what bike or tyres you use
and bearing in mind you say youre a big chap, I'd go with the
makers 2 up recommended pressures and see how it feels.
later You can make adjustments to suit.

Weather etc
There are so many variables to consider when riding bikes that its safer to say that
how you ride determines how long you ride
Generally speaking, in the wet 'Ride easy'
never assume that because you have expensive tyres you wont fall off.

I meant whether to adjust tyre pressure if its summer or winter ...

I 'm in hard water area so shall stick some distilled in ...

Shall i take it i can buy any type of coolant, be it car or bike .. as i have a service dvd and intend on serviceing myself after the first service ....

Leave tap water 24hrs in a jar but really you can just use it str8 from the tap

TBH
I dont bother with the pos neg order much myself but
The theory is that if theres a load present
the possible arcing caused when connecting and disconnecting
the terminals could ignite the hydrogen gas given off by the battery.

If you have no load such as alarms clocks or other gizmos etc
then the order you remove terminals isnt so important.
