Dipped or main beam poll?

I've just passed my test so I know that the official line is that you always ride with dipped beam on.

However, I always go for the main beam to make sure I'm seen during the day, even if that dazzles drivers.

What do you guys do who have been riding for years ?

Haven't been riding years but i wont ride with full beam, only dipped. Simply because i dont want to dazzle other drivers, and if they can't see a dipped beam ill be dammed if they will see a full beam

Dipped. Riding with your mains is just as bad as driving with your fog lights on.

All you do is dazzle and piss off other other road users.

And while they're dazzled, they're not going to see the bike filtering after you.

If they're turning and you're approaching the junction, the high beam doesn't allow them to judge your speed any better.

If they're about to t-bone you, you could have a set of off-road spots and it won't make a blind bit of difference.

Well currently its a 60/40 split in favour of dipped beams so I'll bow to your superior knowledge and go with dipped from now on..

Afraid I would see riding with main beam on as extremely inconsiderate. As to viability, having destroyed their vision just hope that it has recovered in time before another bike turns up.

You have to be a complete inconsiderate cunt to drive or ride with your main beam on in the day (or even at night when there is oncoming traffic). Those plebs in cars that drive around with fog lights on in the day piss me off too.

From the pov of a car driver;
I'm no more likely to see you with your main beam on. If i'm looking, i'll see you anyway. If i'm not looking, i'm still no going to see you, lights or not.

It's just that if your being a dick, I'm less likely to give a shit if you come to harm. This applies to anyone and everyone. car / bike / pedstrian.

Dipped always. Been a cyclist for years and having a moments dazzle can cause some nasty cyclist crashes.

Another thing to remember is that because people sit lower in cars, dipped beam can often be just a blinding as dipped, because a bikes lights are high relative to the drivers position.

There is no option for off! I never have my lights on during the day.

Riding with your headlights on during the day makes it harder for drivers to judge your distance, especially when waiting to pull out and a bike is approaching. And more so on main beam too.

All you see is a bright light, and not the bike it's self, and its very hard to judge the distance of just a light without seeing what or where it's coming from.

I thought this was common knowledge?!

no lights on in the day unless the weather is a bit rough

I've had a couple of bikes that had their lights on permanently & I had twats pulling out in front of me loads more than on any of my other bikes

Sidelights only during the day on the GS, dipped on the ZX9, as above, main beam when not genuinely needed is utterly inconsiderate.
