Posted: 01:45 - 03 Jul 2010 Post subject: Any Alternative Security Products? |
 |
|
I'm planning to start using my 125 to get to work sometimes, and i want to park it on the road right outside of the shop (it can be easily seen from the counter - the road is literally 4/5m away from the counter including pavement and there's almost always someone there). I figured i'm best putting a cheap alarm/immobiliser on it (not a certified system, just something to make a noise if it's moved). I want it all as convenient as possible, but i don't feel that an easily disabled alarm alone is enough actual security, so i want to combine this with some convenient physical security, to totally prevent joyriding, and make the professionals jog on to an easier target.
I was wondering if anyone has come across any alternatives to the traditional chain/cable through a wheel security (i want to avoid the dirty hands as i work with food) - something else i can instead use to prevent my wheel(s) being turned without permission (or at least ridden away!). And i can't use a disc lock because i have dual drums (and a bad memory i can't trust )
For example, something like Grip-Lock initially seemed good (as demonstrated here: https://www.grip-lock.com/Grip-Locks/ ). However, not only is too expensive for what it is (£45!!), it's a little *too* easy to bypass, and the reviews aren't all great as it can jam on, and apparently be picked / hammered off, all too easily. So anything else? (for example, i spotted a motorcycle clamp, but it's far too bulky and expensive).
Maybe i'm looking for something that doesn't exist (hence why i'm asking, because i can't think of anything else) - i just want a low faff (and cheap - don't see the need to spend much money for something that's not even going to prevent the bike being lifted) solution, for situations like this, when i don't want to bring along my Almax chain and lock it up to the nearest lamppost a couple of streets away via the frame ____________________ -- Ingah |

There is a cheap "no wires" motorbike alarm you can get from ebay, runs from a 9v battery, you just chuck it under the seat, has a little blip remote too.
Edit: found link - https://wap.ebay.co.uk/Pages/ViewItem.aspx?emvAD=995x484&aid=270641355312&emvcc=0
Wouldn't rate it for amazing security but I use a backpack alarm in the same way at home, turn it on, shove under seat and it goes off if someone moves the bike. So long as you're in earshot of the thing it should be fine.
I want something I can use at home that will immobilise my bike without requiring bolts or concrete pouring. Where did you see the motorbike clamp? I have nothing to lock my bike to at home ____________________ 2008 VFR800 VTEC |

Drill a hole in the back sprocket, put a padlock through it.
Or a u-lock through the front wheel going round both forks which would be cleaner.
Just some thinking out loud:
One I used to do when I had to park my bike on the street is remove the handlebar clamps, very difficult to push a bike at any speed without the use of the handlebars. Time consuming though, I'm trying to think of some way of making them quick-detach, like something cunning using a couple of bicycle QD wheel skewers and a slotted end on the bar clamps.
Maybe some way of locking the mainstand down? I'm not that sure of the setup on a CG, but I'm thinking of some sort of sliding pin that locks out behind it when in the down position in a similar way to how the steering lock works. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. For the CG125 I have an old Abus U lock. Around about 10 to 12 inches long, 4 to 6 inches wide (from memory). Fits through the front forks and wire wheels. Stops the bike being easily wheeled away (no disc brakes for disc lock, chain cover means no stinkwheel sprocket lock).
I think the lock was originally used for a pushbike.
Also need a chain and lock to secure to an immovable object.

How about something going from a stand to the handle bar - acting as a steering lock and stand clamp at the same time.
I'm thinking for fancyness, a bar-end could be quick released and pulled down with a length of retracting steel cable to clip on to a specific bit of a stand.
Might be a bit complicated to mate, however . |
Although, if it is only to be used outside the shop, a solid bar with a hook on one end and a lockable clamp on the other end might do the trick. Put the bike on the stand, hook the bar round one leg of the stand, pull the steering to full lock and clamp the hoop round the fork stanchion. That would pretty effectively immobalise the whole outfit.
Heavy and numb but you're not having to carry it about with you.
You saw it here first folks. Send all comission cheques to G and stinkwheel c/o BCF.com. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
