Hi all,

I have a trackday booked in at Castle Combe on monday 12th July so I need to get the bike sorted for the track.

To cut a long story short, a silly people carrier welding woman reversed over my R1 a couple of weeks ago so I haven't been able to start my work on it until now. It has been classed as CAT D writeoff and I bought it back from a grand sum of £700.

So anyway, I have just under a week to transform my road going bike into something more suited to the track. I thought I would share how I am going to go about it.

This is my bike now after the incident, all fine apart from a few scratches. Not bad for £700 Wink

First port of call was to take the fairings off. No dramas other than a few chewed up ali bolts from the aftermarker undertray. Lights came off without a problem too but required chinese sized fingers to access some of the bolts. In the end I took the screen off first as it made life alot easier. Thumbs Up The 1000dB Termi growler had to come off too and is being replaced with the titanium Akropovic can that has been sitting neglected in the corner of my garage for the past half a year.

Next step was to get the bike up on the paddock stands to get its shoes/ feet off. By luck I found a set of swing arm bobbins I bought in 2007 for my RS125. They were too big so I just put them to one side and bought some more Rolling Eyes They replaced the current bent ones nicely. Once up on the stands I removed both wheels and gave everything a bit of a clean. Also, I finally fitted the titanium sprocket nuts I bought ages ago. Yum yum...

The plan for tomorrow is to fit my new hoops and give the brakes a general service / overhaul. I will update as I make progress.

Cheers all,

Damon

Day 2

The main objective of today was to get the tyres changed. Got a friend to change them in return for fibreglassing a crack in his seat unit. Thumbs Up

I changed my 2 month old Pirelli Diablo supercorsas for a nice set of... yes, you guessed it, Pirelli Diablo supercorsas. I tend to run a 180/55 rear as it allows me to get the bike cornered quicker than a 190.

I also test fitted the rear seal cowel today. With a bit of shouting and swearing I got it to fit well enough. I'm not sure if I should fit the undertray though as it looks a bit bare without it. What do you guys think? Neutral

Other than that, I have cleaned the sus linkage/swingarm and overhaulled the rear brake caliper, Paying special attention to the pistons and the pins. It was just a case of cleaning everything up, copper greasing the back of the pads and refitting. They were working perfectly before, but were just a bit grubby from daily use.

Tomorrow I am going to get the wheels balanced (hopefully) and fitted. I will overhaul the front brake calipers and lube cables bearings etc. I will also refit the repaired speedo/clocks and if I have enough time, fit the front fairing. Mr. Green

Actually, come to think of it, you live near me, right? PM me the bints address and I am going to start leaving my bike outside her house.

Day 3

Today I spent most of the day looking for a cheap cordless drill for drilling the mounting points in the fairings. Finally found one in homebase for £9.99, result! I also booked in the wheels to be balanced for tomorrow morning. Thumbs Up

Went back to garage after my venture into the outside world and fitted the clocks and cleaned up the loom. Everything was looking lovely up front now so I fitted the front cowel. I held the cowel in place with my knee and guessed where to drill the holes. Luckily they were spot on Cool and everything bolted down nicely.

https://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs073.ash2/37008_10150219873940497_784455496_13620494_5575025_n.jpg

Bolted down the tail unit and started trimming the foam for the seat. I will sand the foam into a nice profile tomorrow if I get the time. I then set to work overhaulling the front calipers. Once again they were working perfectly, but just needed a bit of a dust off. The quiet Akropovic went on and she fired up first time. Not bad considering she's been sitting there for 2 weeks. Thumbs Up

I took the tyre pens to my tyres Neutral It's wrong I know, but I quite like how they have come out.

Neutral Never ridden a R6 with a 190 rear. The r1 has a 190 as standard and it makes turn ins feel sluggish in comparison to the 180 tyre.

Day 3

Nearly finished!! Eveything went back on including the newly balanced wheels. They rear was 97grams off originally Shocked The guy had to move the tyre on the rim a few times to get it to something he could work with.

Getting the wheels on was a nightmare, the paddock stands are built in such a way that you cannot get the thick part of the spindle past it without lifting the front end off Neutral After some shouting, swearing, cuts and bruises I managed to get them on. The front fell off the paddock stand so I ended up holding the bikes front end whilst the wheel slotted in...

Did the odd jobs like cutting and sticking the stomp grips and fixing the bent side stand. All in all today was a very productive day. Tomorrow I am going to fit the foam seat give the wheels a bit of a clean. Bring on monday Mr. Green

Thanks!!

Weather was alright. Was raining in the morning but that didn't stop some knee down action Cool

Nope, as I was setting the bike up just for a trackday I didn't need to lockwire anything. I have however cross drilled all the important bolts ready for lockwiring v soon.

Thumbs Up

Just out of interest do the stomp grips make scratches hard to see on the tank do you know?
