Looks like a new tiger thing, and maybe a more off road biased variant.
Cool Cool Cool

Ooh. Stupid website though. No doubt some spy pics will be all over the place long before those other videos have gone live as well, so I'm not sure what the point is.

Out of curiosity, did any of the recent Tiger's have any off roady bits in their promo materials? If it did then this is probably nothing to get excited about.

What happened to the 1050 Daytona everyone said they were going to make?

This was what the bike was supposedly going to look like, would be awesome if they brought it out! They need a 1 litre Superbike to compete with everyone else!

Not going to happen. If they can't beat or equal the BMW S1000RR then they'll be seen to have failed.

Sadly I suspect we're talking a GS/super tenere competitor, but I would love to see a detuned 675 based one. As it's pretty thin at the mo, there's some definite potential to add longer travel suspension, a high level exhaust (along with a few bits of protection) and wide bars - mine weighs 175kg with a bit of fuel, so get somewhere not too far off that and you've got a really useful/usable bike.

Interesting, despite slagging it off, the multistrada did pretty well at Pikes Peak this year - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5JQdgvzuL0&fmt=22#t=2m02s - however I suspect that's more from being fast on the roads versus the supermotos, then being good in the dirt. And remember an R1 did pretty well on the all-dirt Erzburg hill climb day.

Sam: the litre bike market is now even more glogged up. In the 600 market you can get a bit of variation with more torque; however even the big twins are probably going to be lacking to the BMW for 'go' in gear I suspect. I doubt they can come near the beemer on price per performance, so not sure it'd be a good bike to release.

lol,

so did every one here buy their bike based on the press acclaiming it better then its rivals in its class?

the bmw is not the best seller to my knowledge..... so bhp and lap times performed by some one likely more talented then your self cant be the only deciding factor in ones purchase right?

i dont see how making a good bike could be a "fail" just because its "not better" then another

Spit Fire: TT600. I rest my case.

To clarify, the TT600 was a good bike with a couple of niggles, and it wasn't *quite* as good as contemporary 600s and so it was lashed in the biking press. Seriously, a Daytona 1000 would have to be better or similar than the S1000RR to be considered anything but a failure.

Plus I suspect the Beemer would be the bestseller if the Blade, ZX10 and GSXR1000 were all £12k.

Most modern sports bikes are very similar - for a good reason because they have all been designed to be very good and there's only so far you can adjust the basic well-researched formula.

People buy existing bikes on various grounds, such as brand or model loyalty. Some people would buy a Triumph just because it's British, but otherwise I'd expect a new model to NEED to have a decent number of areas where it's better than other bikes.

And a good/'ok' bike can fail by not selling enough because everyone who would consider one is buying another bike which does everything better.

It was also a clone aimed at the CBR600, so other than the badge nothing extra to persuade people to buy it. Not a different engine, different styling, different exhaust note, different suspension, etc.

Make something that is competitive (doesn't have to be class leading) but which offers something unique that people want and you will get decent sales.

A 1L V6 could be that (while maintaining their link to 3 cylinders, just a pair of 3s nailed together), and while it would cost more it would possibly not cost as much extra to make as they could charge extra for its uniqueness. A 1350cc V6 could be rather rapid.

All the best

Just because "PB said" it doesn't make it so.

The Daytona 675 was many years in development IIRC, so they won't release one until they're sure it'll be good for 5/6 years without a major revamp. They just don't have the budget of the Japanese factories.

Now 1350cc isn't much more than 1200cc, which the latest twin cylinder sports bike are up to - if only they could keep the weight down, I suspect it would be a bike with amazing potential.
However, unfortunately I suspect that something 'interesting' like that is way down the list, especially with likely R&D costs.

Viral Marketing usually works brilliantly, little odd to see it for a Motorcycle, rather than something far cheaper, and people can pre-order etc. Most people don't eagerly await for a new bike release.

Interesting video though

i agree with the above.

and this is my point, people base there purpose of purchase on some many different things it would be ignorant to say unless its the best in the class it a "fail"

i bet manufacture wish the formula to success was that simple

there were rumours a while back of a tiger cub ie a 675 based version of a tiger.

A tiger is more for upright touring with maybe the occasional gravelly road, so I expect the tiger cub to be similar, which isnt a bad thing in my opinion.

The word Adventure, is just a fashionable way of saying touring possibly with a few unpaved roads thrown in.

I'm not knocking this, as its probably a kind of bike I'd be interested in.

I like the street triple but no screen could be a bit of a pain on distance. The 675 daytona is probably a bit too much of a track bike for my normal needs really. So a tiger cub that could do everything from commuting, to weekend twisties, to a tour around Wales or Scotland would be good.

We're talking the difference between 'good' sales, which the 675 did have that year too I believe and bad sales/reviews, which I believe is quite likely for a 1050 based superbike.

The vast majority of people with £12500 to spend on a new model of sports bike will be doing on it's abilities I reckon. A few brand loyalty, looks etc, but I would expect the vast majority of performance.
Other genres less so, but sports bikes the SPORTS it's reasonable to assume is going to be a big aspect.

Quote:

RRP seems to be around R1 £12500, ZX10R £10290, CBR £11,370 and GSXR £10440. I know if I had that much to spend I would definitely be spending £12500 on the BMW - sure the others will sell well in reality, including the R1 which has got pretty slated for it's engine from many sides. However these are bikes with an established fan base and I'd expect a lot more sales people trying to push them.

Quote:

The question is 'would it sell well', I believe the answer is 'no' for a variety of reasons so it would be reasonable to class it as 'fail'.
If they tried to market it as a lighter Sprint, they might have more success, but the current sprint motor is a bit underwhelming to my mind, so I'd expect they'd need quite a lot of work on it.

Quote:

Not in the case of the KTM adventure models, or the Highland which I think did have an 'adventure' model.

Many bike magazines (and me) maintain that Brand loyalty works with most types of bike except for supersports 600s and 1000cc superbikes.

BMW have had a GPZ900R/First Blade/First R1 moment with the S1000RR as far as I can tell. Its so far ahead of the curve that people will need to adjust their brains to cope with bikes that are that quick. The Beemer hasn't been on sale for long, but people will pay for it. Due to the weakness of the pound, issues surrounding the yen, inflation and various other issues, litre bikes have all broken the £10k mark. Who's going to worry about spending another £2k on the fastest bestest bike out there? Not many people bought the Daytona 955i when it came out because it wasn't the best bike. It was a very good bike, but bikes have moved on now. A new 1000cc+ Daytona would be better than the 955i sure, but comparatively it wouldn't be a lot worse than the current crop than the 955i was against its contemporaries the Fireblade and 916.

The 1050cc Daytona would have to weigh 180kg wet and make 200bhp to be a success. Which aint gonna happen on Triumphs R+D Budget.

I honestly don't see what the big deal is with the S1000RR?? I have a couple of friends with them, they have a rubbish mid range, there pretty heavy in there class, and they see all the eletrics actually stop it being fun some of the time. They might make 15 - 20bhp more at the rear wheel, but its all right at the top. If you look at all the graphs, it gets killed up to around 10,000rpm the CBR. Fast Bikes did a test, the CBR beat it to 60mph, 100mph and on the 1/4 mile, its also got a shed more mid range. I think someone needs to come out with something, with the same top end as the BMW, but more mid range and less weight. The CBR is £10,321 as well by the way!

If I had £12.5k it wouldn't be getting spent on the BMW.

I am looking forward to the 2011 ZX10R though, there claiming big power and little weight, and it looks awesome!! Might be my next bike, Im going to wait until next year now and see what comes out, hopefully something pretty special!

To be honest, it doesn't matter what you or I think about a bike, it matters what the press think of a bike. And at the moment the BMW is the darling of the motorcycle press, and whatever you say about midrange its still 20bhp more powerful than the next most powerful bike, its still got traction control, ABS and linked brakes that make average riders look shit hot, and its still supposed to give a great ride quality. In last months Performance Bikes it completely trounced all of the competition. One journalist even said that this years R1 was like "Riding on marbles in comparison to the S1000RR".

I won't be surprised if next year all of the big four come out with litre bikes that make 200bhp and have traction control and all the rest of it, but Triumph aren't going to do it. They simply don't have the R&D budget. Anything that comes out now that doesn't have traction control, ABS, Switchable power modes etc etc, is going to be labelled a 'throwback' and stuff like that. Just look at the Thunderrace compared to the Fireblade, the ZX9R compared to the R1 etc etc. Triumph can't afford to build a copy of last years R1, and they aren't going to match the beemer.

irc the press said it was to focused for the road, had a set up to stiff for British roads, and lacked midrange...... the 675 ranked higher in test but sold less

why?

of course, its a performance bike, so performance is a big factor.
if i gave you a open cheque to go buy a 600 now, what would you buy?

you and mayjay have been riding for many years,
has the best bike always sold the best?
or even the best car, the best computer

mayjay stated the price is the reason for this, but it retails at similar coin to its rivals

Shocked ?

you have never heard any one say they "wont buy a ducati", or im a "honda man"
or some one that goes from one gsxr to the next,
or the fact that you can associate a racers name with a bike and it sells more

Been reading lots on Triumphs and have just got one. Rumour is the Tiger is based on the 675 but may have the capcity upped anywhere to 800cc. The radiator shrouds/indicators in the pic look very similar (if not the same) to the street triple.

A more off-road biased model and a more road biased one (supermoto?) are being made as well so should be interesting to see what happens.
