Hi

My bike is having some issues, the bike starts fine but misfires and runs on 3 cylinders Sad Now this doesn't happen evertytime but occasionally.

It then ride like a bag of bones until about 15-20 miles later where it just picks itself up and runs sweet again Embarassed

So my question is what could be wrong with it, does in need the carbs cleaning, carbs balancing or could it be something else Confused

Its a 97 Bandit 600 with 9k on the clocks, it has had a recent oil change, new iridium spark plugs and a new air filter.

If anyone could shed some light on this or just some advice, it would be greatly appreciated Karma

Many thanks
Jamie Thumbs Up

When are you using the choke?
3-pots on start up, does sound like carbs could do with some attension, but rough running till warm, is a warm up problem and teh starting point for that is whether you are knocking teh choke on for start up and then off too early or something.

Thanks for the reply,
yes i use the choke on start up, and let it warm up for a few mins whilst i'm getting my gear on Confused

So its most definately a carb issue as it had 3 cylinders on start up?

Hi

Not certainly the carbs, no. Could also be a ignition related such as plug, HT cap or plug lead (most other things would affect 2 cylinders). Also it could be valve clearances.

My first guess would be the plugs. If you are unsure then swap the plug between the cylinder than is playing up and one of the others and see if a different cylinder misbehaves.

All the best

Keith

Thanks for the reply,
The spark plugs were brand new just the other week, and i had them out the other day to clean them up, but they weren't even dirty.
The issue was present before i bought the new plugs as i thought this may remedy it Confused

Oh bugger i hope its not valve clearances as i've heard thats a pricey job Crying or Very sad

HT cap or plug lead

Would these problems not be constant though, as my bike seems to clear it cheast and run fine after a while Rolling Eyes in saying that i'm a newbie to this so i could be talking rubbish Confused

So things to check;

HT cap or plug lead
Carbs

Is there anything else i should check or will the fault lie within these three?

Many thanks for your replys Karma

Not really. Bandit uses screw and locknut valve adjustment which is pretty quick and cheap.

Most likely yes, but not impossible. Especially if the problem is caused by water in there allowing things to short out until it steams off.

All the best

Maybe an ignition coil is on the way out, they sometimes do odd things like run OK for a while then fire intermittently.
There will be two, each does two cylinders.

+1. Very easy to do the valve clearances on that motor.

Thanks for the reply,
But its only dropped one cylinder and not two?
It's the as you look from the front the 2nd one in from the right Confused
Can a dodgy ignition coil cause just one to be dropped or is it always 2?

I wouldn't rule it out - You could swap them over to test.
