After riding a massive tourer for well over a year I sold it and bought a naked sportsbike (BMW F800S).
Went out for a ride to my old favourite knee down roundabout to see how rusty i was (and i was rather bad, felt a bloody mile away ).
When i got home after a good run round some twisties I was glad to see the strips gone from the back, but the front tyre still had massive strips, whats this due to? Bad corner entry speed?
Might get some pics up later.

Not necessarily. Just the profile. Different makes/models, etc
I didn't have any chicken strips on front or rear on the NC30, even to the point that I was really ragging it round corners and you could see it on the tyres!
On the Hornet however I could never get the front strips off, yet the rear was truely ragged.
I'm pretty sure Big_Ham when he had a trackday Hornet he couldn't get the front strips away either, and he was going slow. I think the case is by the time you get to the edge of the front tyre on the Hornets, you will have run out of tyre on the rear, though I may be wrong...
I've heard most people will have trouble getting rid of the front strips of supercorsa tyres because that profile is just that steep! ____________________ '99 Hornet 600 , VFR 400 NC30 '92 , Kasawamasaki GT 550 , '98 Hornet 600

Found it differs from bike to bike and tyre profile to profile.
Normally, I tend to get rid of the back's strips easier than the front. My NC30 wears evenly, but my ER6 had none on the front but a couple of mm on the back...
Not that it should matter anyway, it's not always a sole reflection on how quickly a bike's been cornering. |

I didn't think it was possible to get rid of chicken strips on the front, due to the profile of the tyre. ____________________

Think it depends how hard your counter steering too. The rake angle of the fork means that the more you turn the bars, the more the houlder of the tyre will be in contact with the road, rather than the centre of the tyre. Would have expected this to be even more so when the bike is leant right over. ____________________

Aha.
I think it's good to have atleast a little bit of unused rubber. Means you've got something in reserve if things go tits up. ____________________

When you lean a bike over, the back wheel is still in line wit the bike, the front is twisted at whatever angle th ebars are pointing, right?
If you are leaned right over in fast bends, then the steering angle is minimal, so the fornt and rear tyres will show similar amounts of lean angle.
If you are cranked over NOT so far then you get chicken strips.
BUT if you twiost the bars, so the front is angled in more, the front will rub more than the rear.
SO, if you are leaving wider strips on the front, means that YOUR cornering is wider faster bends not dumping it low in the slow-speed sruff.
Would alsoi expect that the the rubber would show 'feathering' the sort of curved wear marks from the inside radisu being that much smaller than the outer, and the 'scrub' on the tyre from being forced to eform that much at high load, rather than just worn to that angle.
Its ALL brevado and Bull-Shit for the mot part, when it comes to talking wear patterns.
feathering says more thnan chicken strips though.
High speeds cause feathers, chicken strips just say how far over you tilt.
People get obsessed with thit though, like getting your knee down.
Just enjoy the bludy ride!

Cheers Teflon-Mike, all of that makes sense, and you were right about my tyre wear (feathering etc).
I'm trying to be a rossi or even fixate on trying to get my knee down. Just wanted to understand more about how the bike/me is behaving to try and generally improve my riding style/skill.
Oh and the Spell Check button is your friend .

On my f650 its the complete opposite to my old S4.
I've got about 2mm on the front and about 10mm on the back, i guess thats funny sized semi-knobbly tyres for you. |

At 1am, after an infuriating afternoon trying to get the spark-plug leads. injector connectors and all the other pipes and wires in the right place on a rover V8 engine, the wine box was my freind, my freind!
On the riding style / knowing whats going on, bit. Just out of interest, do you 'hang-off' or counter-lean? ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

I don't have any strips on my front tyre, but I tend to push the front quite hard, which is probably going to bite me one day!
I ride with a friend, were about as quick as each other, same tyres and he has some strips on the front, but not the back, I think Im just a bit harder on the front! ____________________ 2009 CBR1000RR
