Overheating Laptop

Hi,

My laptop has been playing up for a couple of weeks, and its getting really annoying. It will run fine, but after a couple of hours of being on, will suddenly shut off, i believe due to it overheating. It doesnt shut down properly, just goes off. The cooling fan does run, but obviously isnt very effective.

I have it sat on a large hardback book to help get airflow underneith it, to no avail Sad

I was thinking of making a little platorm thing for it to sit on, with a large fan from a PC mounted in it, blowing into the vents underneith. Nothing massive, about the same size as the book it is currently sat on.

I was going to run the fan from the laptops USB port, disecting an old mobile phone cable. What do you think to this?

Essay over. BTW, its an Acer Aspire Gemstone i think!

My HP netbook used to run hot. I removed the plastic mesh that covered the vents and it runs about 20C cooler now (and more importantly the fan isn't always on making a racket).

Get thee a laptop cooler thingie? I bought my USB one for £6.

Oh and clean the air vents with a can of compressed air.

when this happens i disassemble the laptop and clean all the fluff out of the copper heat pipes and fan areas

Get a can of compressed air say from Misco or Tescos and blast the openings around where the processor is situated, and by doing this you may blow all the crap trapped inside.

I had this problem in the past and doing the above cured it!
