new supermoto

hi there id like to do my test soon and get a bigger supermoto with more power than my pulse adrenaline. i like the ktm models such as smr 450 and the 525 model and honda xr's just something around that area .the bike will be used for cruising, going round town and going to work. any recommendations please? thankyou

For the use you describe i think you want a relatively light, nippy, road based supermoto - the only one I can think of is Suzuki's DRZ400SM.

The ktm SMR series are race bikes with demanding servicing requirements, same for the other factory supermotos from husky , tm , vor etc.

The older tech bikes like XR250,400,600 TTR etc, are good if you can find one with a set of supermoto wheels to go with.

thanks for replies im on L plates at the moment but will be booking test soon when ive saved up enough for the new bike ( looking to spend £1500 - 2500 )

Will you be on a restricted licence?

Either way, I think I'd go for a SM610 or DZR400SM if you can find them in your price range, otherwise would definitely be considering a home-brew XR400 conversion or DR600 etc.

sorry not sure what you mean by restricted license? ill keep an eye out for a dzr400 when ive saved up

If your under 21 and cant do a d.a.s then you'll do an A2 licence and be restricted to 33bhp for 2 years.

If you are in the UK and pass your test when you're under 21 you will be restricted to 33hp for two years.
If you are 21 or older you can do 'direct access' which allows you to ride any bike.

Stick with the drz mate, they don't make an awful lot more than 33bhp. It's not exactly a well enforced law

A 100% standard DRZ is pretty much bang on 33bhp despite what suzuki say, I had a DRZ with a full yoshimura system and a ZX6R on my restricted license and was never asked about restrictions when I was stopped 2 or 3 times by traffic police.

The DRZ is a good road going supermoto and I had loads of fun on mine just after I passed my test even if they are a little underpowered and heavy for a supermoto but they are very reliable.

I've 20 with a restricted license and have a DRZ Put an aftermarket (aka loud ) exhaust on and it will do for 2 years no bother Dunno about the exact BHP, some say 40... some say 33bhp... all I know is the log book says 29kW and the restriction on my license is =<25kW
