 |
|
This may be a stupid question, but my rear shock on the Hornet is a bit tatty to say the least (stock shock) and I'd like to get it looking as new again.
Is it easy to dismantle?
And once the spring is off is that ok to be sandblasted and powdercoated to a colour of my choice? I know a place locally that would do it cheap...
And it could probably do with new oil, etc b I know nothing of shocks. I have to send it off to somewhere or something? Or can I do it myself?

Hi
Depending on the design getting the spring off might be fairly easy (eg, on the ZZR600 the preload collars can just be unscrewed all the way off). However it might be that the spring is located with some collets and you would need to compress the spring to allow you to remove these. Getting some small enough spring compressors might be difficult.
Should be easy enough to get the spring powder coated. Just make sure the finish is soft enough to flex as the spring moves.
Forget taking the actual shock itself to pieces. It will contain oil with pressurised gas (probably nitrogen).
All the best

YOu can get the spring off.
You need those £10 spring compressors for cars off ebay..
You then saw the ends down slightl to fit them into the spring and thenstand on them and wind them up each side one turn at a time.
It'll come off the spring but takes a fair bit of time. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will. In the end, your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching. |

It's possible someone like Hagon/Kais etc. can service it for you, but best to check first.
You could also try and track down a second hand race shock from somewhere. ____________________ My Flickr |

Will have a look and then see if I'll do it. Still need a few things before the bike can be finished... ____________________ '99 Hornet 600 , VFR 400 NC30 '92 , Kasawamasaki GT 550 , '98 Hornet 600

I thought the Hornet shock wasn't rebuildable? That's the general consensus on the Nest at least. |

It's not? I don't know... So once it's gone... it's gone?
I'm pretty sure people have sent their shocks to k-tech or other similar things, had just the spring changed and a general overhaul to the shock...
Seems a bit stupid you can't recondition it... ____________________ '99 Hornet 600 , VFR 400 NC30 '92 , Kasawamasaki GT 550 , '98 Hornet 600

With my shock, they drilled a hole into the en cap of the res, and put a valve into it.
However, the first time round they did the shock, the damping was really fucked up, and I had to take it back. The second time roun they replace the end of the res with that gold cap, and it works brilliantly now.
Does the hornet shock have a res? ____________________

Beware of buying car spring compressors.
They're often too big for bike springs. Either the teeth go to deep, or they don't compress short enough.
Special bike ones are smaller and thereby easier to use. ____________________ Yamaha SZR660 Caution to the wind, the throttle pinned! |

Yes, you can rebuild non-rebuildable shocks sometimes.
A friend of mine had his (supposedly non-rebuildable) RRT Fireblade shock done.
