This has probably been done a few times but searching "top gear for bikes" brings up just about every post on the site mentioning gearing.

Do you think it would work if they did a program like top gear but for bikes?

Or has it been done in the past?

Not been done, will never be done. Bikers make up about 0.5% of the population. Car drivers and car lovers about 80%. It's all about market, top gear attempts to diversify it's market by being a funny entertainment show as well as a car show. Do the same thing with bikes and people will turn off the second it comes to anything about bikes.

I have friends who love F1 to death, they are entertained by the most uneventful races. All attempts at getting them to watch even a lap of the most entertaining motoGP or moto2 race ever will always fail. At best you can get them to watch a crash compilation video that they will find funny, then they will instantly bore the second something isn't upside down and on fire.

I've heard of Fifth Gear doing a few "bike vs car" things.

And there was the Top Gear Vietnam special (that was about bikes for the entireity).

But no, i can't see it working as a show in it's own right (yet). Motorcycling's getting more popular (Very Happy), but as mentioned above, there aren't nearly so many bikers as drivers. So the potental market is greatly reduced.

If anything does come out though, i know i'd watch it at least!

I think it would be successful if the show was able to connect with the audience enough for them to understand what the challenges of riding the different bikes are like - and being able to feel what the rider is feeling when doing some ridiculous challenge, like riding a C90 in a race through London at rush hour against a litre sports Laughing

I know that Top Gear, Fifth Gear and a few others have done "biking specials" in the past, and I've watched them with great interest, but as already mentioned it's still a relatively limited market at the moment.

If you were REALLY desperate you could check out the re-runs of All The Gear No Idea

It won't work.

TopGear isn't solely about cars - it's a lot to do with the staged ventures of the presenters - so much so even my Mum likes it.

Here's some threads that use that exact phrase: from google, of course there are lots more that just use similar Smile.

As I've no doubt said before - top gear isn't about cars. The cars top gear does feature are ones people watching it will never buy, but that love to become 'experts' on down the pub (most bikes are affordable by most people). It's horribly formulaic, but the formula they have works because of the stupidly highly paid presenters and the script writers they have, others haven't had those years of experience of doing exactly the same thing every time Wink.

That utterly amazes me too. I remember having friends round when the laguna GP was on where Rossi & Stoner were fighting it out, a brilliant race yet my mates werent interested even though they are petrol heads. Yet they'll sit and watch an F1 procession and call it exciting Question

It would suck.

Bikes are far too 'samey' for the casual observer to be interested, and bikers are far too anal - heaven forbid that Top Gear For Bikes says your bike isn't quite as good as your mate's bike.

Now, Top Gear for aeroplanes, that would have potential.

What about a slot for bikes on the car based programs?
say 4 or 5 mins a week ?

Fifth gear does have bikes on sometimes.
But what it seems people want is 'Top Gear' which is a specific scripted show that costs ridiculous amounts to produce and isn't likely to be replicated in this economic climate.

Men and Motors used to have a decent few bike shows, don't know about now. None were that great, but were similar to car shows at the same kind of budget.

Used to be a series on one of the satellite channels called Four Wheels Good (for cars) usually followed by a half hour bike programme called Two Wheels Better.

surely the main reason it wont happen is popularity vs cost

so question....... would it have to be on tv.....?

the Internet is becoming ever more popular.
i practically don't watch tv now days. i watch the gp, sbk highlights etc on-line,

so couldn't you make a "top gear" style bike show, and just host it on-line.
it would be just like a audiovisual version of your monthly bike mag.

people subscribe to mags, read mcn.
read reviews online, and watch comparison test on youtube.

could that not all be warped up in a fortnightly show with good/funny presenters, hosted on line and aim directly at the biking population

I know you only made that up, and it might not be far out - but a lot more than that have an interest in bikes without actually owning and riding one.

Star in a reasonably priced plane. Think I would pay to watch that live (from a safe distance), although Hello magazine would (hopefully) soon run out of people to do articles on.

All the best

There is https://www.fastbikesmag.com/ , who have a few DVDs of them being arses mainly, which is more about the actual bikes and seeing what they can actually do rather than the comedy of top gear, still entertaining though.

But as said above, it wouldn't work on telly. Only people with bikes or that have an interest in bikes will watch it which means they would make hardly any money compared to Top gear, which anyone can watch and take interest in.

Back in the '90s Top Gear used to have a (relatively) regular bike slot, unfortunately it was hosted by Steve Berry who is/was (at best) an annoying cock.

That might work if Jeremy Clarkson didn't hate bikes/bikers (or gay power rangers as he calls us Rolling Eyes ).

It'd be pretty damn boring, they wouldn't filter, they'd just wheelie on track and get their knee's down. A race between a bike and car/plane/train would be poop as the bike won't get held up by anything other than the rider.

I like the comment about adding bikes into Top Gear as a feature each week. Richard Hammond rides a busa and James May rides bikes too so it would be pretty cool if they did a feature on a new bike and blasted it round the track too.
