1992 gsxr 400 - overcharged?

Hi guys,

i'm looking at a gsxr 400 that has a battery overcharging fault, is this common on these bikes or is there items which are most likely to cause this? my concern is that it may have wiped out all the electrics on the bike/damaged wiring etc. is this possible?

if it works it hasnt fried anything. Thats what fuses are for.
And reg/rect at fault

ok bud cheers, i'm trying to find out exactly what does/doesnt work, but he says the bike won't start because of this however the engine is sound.. fairly hard to prove i guess lol, if the rectifier goes i presume on turning the ignition on everything should light up as normal clocks wise? or does it just knock everything out completely?

If you get another battery, it should be ok to plug in to check the engine sounds ok at least.

As matt says, reg/rec will need to be replaced at some point most probably, but rest should be ok.

if the reg rect goes everything should still work. It should even run too.
If it doesnt, its probably the generator which would be a lot more hassle and cost, and could give the same symptoms.

Plus, if it doesnt run... How does he know its overcharging?

If the regulator is fried it'll often burn or slightly melt the plug that goes into it but it's the first thing to swap because even if the alternator is at fault it's probably killed the regulator too, but you need to check each bit.
