Having got used to proper brakes on the CB500 i'm not looking forward to getting reaquainted with the CG's drum brakes (i'm currently restoring the bike with the intention of using it for cheaper commuting). The good news is that the front brake shoes are pretty much at their wear limit, so i get to have some new ones Very Happy

What brand though? (anyone tried a few out before, noticed any difference to the braking power?)
Only recommendation i have so far is for EBC: https://hondacg125.awardspace.com/brakes.htm - but they're expensive... Are they really any better/more powerful than the cheapy no-name brands? (i'm trying hard not to be suckered by advertising here).

I'm interested to know this too, my CG has drums and might need new shoes soon.

I do have experience of EBC brakes on cars and I rate them highly for that.

EBC organic/kevlar? I'd imagine if you can get sintered shoes, they'd wear the drum out quicker and I think organic pads/shoes give plenty of stopping power on a small bike.

I put ebc grooved ones on the back of the YBR after knocking a bottle of fork oil over them (I need to learn to put things away after I finish with them). And noticed a slight difference over the stock ones, but they were only £15 as opposed to £10 for stock.

I'm not sure they'd be worth 3/4 times the price if CG ones come that cheap.

you knocked fork oil over your brake shoes? Andyet they stop you still? I'm surprised cos to me that would of been in the bin as they were effectivily contaminated

Not sure about CG specific brakes, but EBC usually fare well on most bikes...
As an alternative I've also used Kyoto branded pads on a few different bikes with very effective results.

A word of warning though, DO NOT get Armstrong branded pads etc.
I bought and fitted a set recently and found that they were VERY abrasive on the brake disks, as well as being worn down to the metal base in less than 2 months commuting.
It actually looks like I'll probably have to replace my rear disk very soon because of those Armstrong pads Rolling Eyes

David Silver obviously thought so too:
(I asked for front brake shoes for my 2002 CG).
"We have the genuine Front SHOES IN STOCK @3.95 a pair. Postage will be 1.95. Delivery time is 2/3 working days."
Including VAT it was £6.93.

Having received them though, they're clearly too small to fit (rear brake size at a guess).

The response from David Silver: "...According to our pattern supplier the type supplied should fit but obviously this does not seem to be the case. The genuine shoes as listed in the parts list for the CG125M1 are £12.77 plus VAT [£15.01] and would take a few days to order in..."
Does anyone get what that means (as i did request the genuine front shoes originally)?

They're £15 from my Honda dealer anyway, but it's not a mere £6.93 that's for sure! (a shame because i was happy with that price).

Here's what my Honda dealer sent (i originally sent them a query too): "...Genuine Honda shoes cost £15, EBC shoes are £15.98 ... I would recommend the Honda items as they are better quality and less expensive".

So, i guess it comes down to EBC, Honda, or eBay's cheapest... Wink
(I'm still undecided)

Cheers for that (but looks like it'd be very slightly more expensive than the Honda dealer in this circumstance as i only want the front shoes, so £14.38 + £1.95 delivery = £16.33 vs Honda's £16 for EBC or £15 OEM - i have to go pick up bits from Honda anyway so the postage to the door's no use this time).

I'm in two minds though, as i found these cheap(est on eBay) pattern shoes and the seller thinks they'll fit (i'm going to send them the dimensions again to check as i'm not 100% convinced yet after David Silver got it wrong):
https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220636963494
(Total: £6.64 incl delivery).

If it was merely the rear drums, i'd have bought them already and be patting myself on the back for saving a tenner, but as the front brake is for when you really need to stop, i'm back to mild indecision (a price based decision is easy, but it's like trying to measure the difference between a swing and a roundabout as far as performance goes).

I tried some really cheap pads in a car years ago, once bedded in i tried 1 emergency stop from 60 and by the time the car did stop my foot was in the carpet and smoke was pouring out of both front wheels, EBC replacements were bought that day...
