Heya folks,

I was messing about on a friends yamaha dt 125 for a weekend and I'm thinking of getting a bike. Sports bikes feel much more comfortable for me to be on and I also like the idea of the throttle not opening up as quickly as on the DT. I'm looking at either a honda nsr125 or an aprilia rs125. The NSR definitely has nicer looks (though I wish the front windshield was bigger) but most things I've read say that the aprilia is better on handling and overall performance. Since you guys all owned them at one stage whatcha reckon?

Aren't too many of them kicking around in these here parts - Mainly nsr's and rs's in Dublin. P.s. - Anyone else from dublin city bought the aprilia or the nsr? What do you reckon of them on running costs / insurance over here?

you dont think peoples judgment will be slighty biased, seeing as most people own or have owned an nsr125 and hardly anyone (with the exception of Keith W) has owned or still owns an RS125??

Personally I'd go with a NSR125! Laughing

Hi

Depends on what you want to use it for. The RS is definatly faster on top end speed, but if you are going to be going round town most of the time that isnt relevant. The RS handles very well, but is quite stiffly sprung. Works brilliantly on smoother roads, but not so good on bumpy roads. RS has lower handlebars which is great at speed but a pain around town. The RS, if treated correctly, is reliable.

All the best

Keith

The RS is too much work!, if you ride one u gotta keep it in high revs all the time to keep it happy. Handling is slightly different. The NSR is just easy to use and reliable(except when u put the choke in too early and it cuts out:))

you don't have to keep it in high revs it's happy just going at 5000 all the time!!!! that an't high!!!and it's because they are tuned race bikes where the nsr an't tuned for racing!

well the main reason i went for the honda NSR was because after having a scooter that i was having to replace parts every few weeks or months i thought i'd like something that will hopefully last a good deal of time before i would have to start prating around and changing things. i do look after my bikes but i'm not fanatical about having to replace parts all the time. I would have gone for a trails bike probably a 4 stroke for reliabilitys sake. But i found out they wheren't much faster than my scoot that i had tunned.
So that left me with a few bikes, Suzuki RG, Yamaha TZR, Honda NSR and the Aprilla RS.
All had there own characteristics,
I was stuck for either the RG, TZR or NSR. After someone at college already has an aprilla, i knew it was the fastest bike of the group , but didnt fancy taking another gamble on reliability.

I couldnt find many RG's about only one i found and that was £1,500 and my insurence was a bit steep.

So this left the NSR and TZR.
After ages or research, people's opinions etc... i finaly came to the desion i wanted the NSR.
There's nothing wrong with the TZR, and i saw a very nice one at the place i went to buy my Honda. But it was a bit too much at £1600, so i settled for the NSR, and to be honest i have'nt looked back since.

I know its not the fastest 125, but i know it has a reputation for a good reliabilty, and to be honest as long as it starts every morning ( because i will be using it during winter) then i'm not to bothered how fast it is or its styling.

An thats why i got it.

Yea same here Scotty, the reason I chose the NSR was because I have to use it all year round and I needed a reliable bike. I mean, how many RS125's do 11500miles and have no engine problems?

Cheers folks - Reliability is a major factor alright and irish roads can tend to be a bit crap - I'll see can I have a noodle on both bikes and see which feels more comfortable - thanks for all the advice.

Kris... my NSR has ate a piston at 2900 miles... my fault though......

An RS125 would have had about 3 pistons by 11500 miles Laughing

I dont think theres anything wrong with the RS125, its like all bike if you pay them enough attension there'll be fine, such as keith explained.
But i just feel as though you dont have to give the NSR as much attension as an RS, maybe i'm wrong and being neive. i have never owned an aprilla so i really shouldnt comment on how reliable it is.
And everyone i have actually spoken to who has one has give it nothing but the thumbs up.
I mean its like all bikes, you might get one that performes and is reliable weather it be an italian made bike or jap. there are just odd occasions where sometimes a bike doesnt live up to its name.
Just a bike of luck maybe...
