2'03.308 Jorge Lorenzo
Vs.
2'04.091 Cal Crutchlow
That time would have put Cruchlow 5th on the MotoGP grid!
With the vast amount of money the GP bikes cost to design and build is it really worth it for such a small difference compared to basically a tweaked production bike? especially over such a long lap. ____________________ Yamaha FZR400RR 3tj

You're right in many ways, however, a few tenths in motor racing can cost a fortune. Also, the type of circuit can play a massive part so just choosing one to compare is not necessarily a fair comparison. To exaggerate the point, if a circuit was an oval you'd probably see hardly any difference. Also, different weather conditions will play a part (since the times aren't taken on the same day).
You also have to considering the technology/tuning restrictions are different for both classes. Given a free reign I imagine the differences would be much bigger. Finally, and importantly, there are no qualifying tyres in MotoGP this year so you'd expect those times to be closer.
Having said that, looking at the qualifying times from Donington Park last year;
MotoGP: Rossi: 1:28.116
WSBK: Spies: 1:29.846
Pretty close but the race pace looked different (we can't tell because it rained for MotoGP). So, check out the times at Assen;
Qualifying
MotoGP: Rossi, 1:36.025
WSBK: Spies, 1:37.626
Race
MotoGP: Rossi, 1:36.558
WSBK: Haga, 1:38.680
Bigger difference during the race itself.
I'd be really interested to know the laptime differences between (say) a World Touring Car (couple of hundred grand?) and an F1 car (couple of million?). Probably a lot bigger because bikes are limited by their design and an F1 car carries enormous corner speed. |

bit unfair on the gp bikes if you ask me, as they have to comply with the 6 engine rule, limited amount of fuel and they do have limitations on what materials they can use for bike parts so they cant do anything too extroadinary to make a technological leap as such., its more refinement.
superbikes arent just tweaked roadbikes, they modified from the groun up,the suspension is pretty much GP spec as far as I know, braced swingarms, carbon subframes and motors putting out over 220bhp with TC, launch crontrol. and Rossi commented that the pirelli tyres are better/easier to ride on than the bridgestones. 200cc advantage.
with retired GP projects on the grid, cough cough apprillia, BMW.
its the same pattern I remember when steve hislop lapped his r1 faster than rossi on his nsr500. ____________________ Dean Stone #777
