PostPosted: 20:13 - 01 Aug 2010    Post subject: Which 125cc to get Reply with quote

Hi everyone,

I'm new here and new to biking, planning to do my CBT soon. I plan on buying a 125 and to use it for commuting to and from work, also for generally running around on shortish (probably less than 100 miles ) trips.
I've been looking at a few bikes online and in dealers.

My friends say I should buy a new 125 as there are a lot of dodgy secondhand ones out there that superficially look great, but a few months in can become very problematic. I reckon that I could buy a good secondhand one for the same cash (I have £1500 to spend). Although obviously I'm not too sure of what dangers too look for when buying secondhand being a newbie.

The new ones I have checked out are Kymco Pulsar and the Keeway Speed. The secondhand ones I have seen are YBR125, CG 125 and the Suzuki RV 125 Van Van. In your opinions what would be the best route to go for, new or used?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

PS: Sorry about the long post

YBR, I preferred it over the CG. Just looked more stylish and modern to me, although the newest YBR's aren't as nice in my opinion. I prefer the 2009 YBR, and for that reason I bought one.

Not an obviously push here or anything, but my 2009 YBR is for sale for £1500 but no worries Mr. Green Razz

i'd go for a cg. at the end of the day its only a means to an end. you will eventually want to get your full license and then want a bigger bike.

points to remember for all those wanting to join the biking comunity on a 125. a cbt costs around 100 quid and is only valid for 2 years. that gives you a choice. spend a tun every 2 years or pass your test. most people would go for their test.

when passed you can buy any bike you want and test result depending you can either ride it right away (DAS course) or have it restricted to 33bhp for 2 years, bearing in mind you can restrict an R1.

so theres no point in splashing out on a brand new bike and then selling it on for half its value. might as well buy a decent second hand and sell it on for almost the same price when you pass your test

Hate to go against the grain here but a Gs will be as good as a cg and possibly cheaper/better in my opinion Laughing

Mines 28 years old and the only problems i have had have been with the wiring, but i'm sure if you found a newer one (post 2000) you shouldn't have much trouble. You would definately get one for way below your budget too.
Failing that, the ybrs are good/ Might be tricky getting one for less than £1500 for one of the newer ones at least.

CG is my suggestion also. You should be able to get a good condition, low mileage, second hand cg for around that sorta money. They are good, reliable bikes.

if you are willing to spend a bit more money why not go for something a bit more exciting and get something like an xr125 or a hyosung gt125?

True.

However, you'll need to ensure you don't buy a chav-owned, trashed example. And you'll want to rebuild the engine. DIY unless you want to waste hundreds. And be sure to keep it topped up with 2 stroke! And be aware that when you have your first drop you're likely to crack the shiny plastics up somewhat (and they're not cheap to replace), so don't get too attached to them!

If the above hasn't put the OP off already, then they're obviously braver than i was when i started riding.

Personally i often tend to see YBRs going at far better condition/mileage for less money than CGs. The CG is clearly the better quality choice out of the 2 - but as everyone knows this (and prices accordingly) sometimes your money is better spent elsewhere so you get a better bike for your buck Wink

My opinion is to get a first bike you can afford to run, insure, and more importantly drop (something without plastics is more likely to meet this requirement) and/or write off (something cheap is more likely to meet this requirement).

As an aside, the brands of 2 new bikes you were looking at aren't very reassuring as a choice for a first bike. IMO, stick to Japanese if you want it reliable so that you can get to work on time every time.

en125's look better than CG's in my opinion, and are around 3 years old, and you'll pick one up for loads less than a grand

CGs are very overrated. The YBR125, RXS100 and GS/EN125 are vastly superior. If you're after a bit of fun, the DT125R is a good choice.

Don't get a CG unless fuel consumption is your only concern - it's the one and only thing the CG125 does better than any other bike of the same size.

I don't like the NSR style of bike at all. It's way too boy racer for me. I prefer something with more classic styling like the YBR, CG, EN style or the GN, SR style as I feel more comfortable on them having tried on few in local bike shops.

I'm doing my CBT on sunday so I'll be getting my first bike in the next couple of weeks Smile

These are brilliant bikes, but its a boring 4 stroke, and i doubt the pit bike exhausts sound that good. Its 'NSR' (Sports btw) style though.

CG's are amazing in the amount of abuse they put up with off ignorant learners and just keep going. They are very simple, easy to ride and economical. They are not fun or desireable. So it's a question of what you want really. NSR would be an awesome bike provided you budget for the top end rebuilds when they are due.
