Recently moved and it would appear that although BT (our previous provider) promised 13mb broadband, it has been painfully slow when downloading or trying to watch vids online.

Never had a problem before, did a quick check to see what BT say and the following seemed quite interesting:

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 2Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 7Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 14Mbps. Our test also indicates that your line could support an estimated ADSL 2+ Annex-M broadband upstream line speed of 750Kbps and downstream line speed of 5.5Mbps.

How can it be this slow in this day and age?

I live quite close to the exchange (I think) and when I found a site showing a map of my street and all available broadband speeds, BT showed 1.3meg. I thought this can't be right but nope, I must have been wrong.

Th wife pays the BT stuff and we're contracted in.

Any ideas of what to do to get out of the dark ages?

So what speed are you actually getting?
The quoted ADSL Max expected is well above average for a non-cable ADSL connection.
Try this.
https://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/

A slightly dodgy connection will really bring down the ADSL max speed as it automatically balances maximum speed against reliable connection.

You need to test ideally with the router/modem in the first entry point and better still take off the face plate and plug it inside.
This will ascertain if the house wiring is causing problems.
You need leave it in there 2 or 3 days really so the speed can stabilise.

5Mb download speed should play even HD youtube videos without pausing.
The 480 option should be OK even around 2MB

i used to get 300kb,then it went down to 100kb...was like this for a year.

that's when i realised i had a little circuit on my house wiring which was hugely throttling my connection, now i get about 5 meg.

That's with BT, any other provider ends up slowing the speeds down in the evening!

Its that damn 'up to' wording again.

First i'd say change router channels, people around you might be on the same one hence the slow speed on a new move.

Second get the accelerator plate from bt, it may help.

Try these first as even 5.5 meg line should be fine with videos and the like.

{When did you get back to england, what happened to oz?}

better be careful with BT and the package you are on. With some packages they charge if you go over your allocated allowance.

It's the same with most ISPs.
