PostPosted: 21:28 - 02 Aug 2010    Post subject: R6 vs R6R Reply with quote

Hi guys, my restriction ends the end of this year and i have my heart set on an r6 ( r1's prices and insurance are out of my league) but i feel i can get an r6. I have been looking at 2006 onwards one cos i want something reliable but looking on ebay for prices i have noticed some are being sold as r6 and some as r6r. The only difference i have managed to research so far is the r6 is 130bhp and the r6r is 100. If this is it then i will go for a r6r as coming from an nsr 125 thats gonna be plenty quick enough anyway. Any r6 owners out there wanna share advice or anyone wanna let me know of anymore differences it would be appreciated, cheers guys. Steven.

an R6 isn't 130bhp.

I always thought the R6R was a track focused race bike?

I went from nothing, to a 2006 R6R, it was awesome Very Happy

They handle so well, all the power is at the top, nothing below 10,000rpm, but that just means you have to work a bit harder, which makes it even more fun. The handling is razor sharp, they do get some bar wobbles as there's no steering damper and the front end is very light, I just left mine without a steering damper, you get used to it after a while. I really did love that bike, they are so much fun. They might be track focused, but there awesome at some fast road riding, I'd definately recommend one Thumbs Up

I bought my 2006 one 2 years ago, for £5500, with 3500 miles on it from a dealer!

£6000 should get you a 2008 or 2009 model, they have slightly more mid range Thumbs Up

Do you live in the UK?

Was there ever two concurrent models sold in the UK?
I'd never heard of it until this post (to be fair, I don't buy bike mags more than once every couple of years or so).
Only the single model - proper supersport bike - is listed on the Yamaha website.
Google suggests the two models are akin to the way the CBR600F is sold alongside the CBR600RR - it seems you can get the non R6R version in some markets which was the 2003 model or so R6 without the improvements that came in the later models.

Oh and have you done a 'the bike insurer' quote on an early r1? Often older bikes can be remarkably cheaper, though if you're young, there's only so far that will help of course.

Looking at pictures on various forums from google, it seems while the 'R6R' gets all the new stuff as you'd expect - the USD forks, radial calipers, GP Can and various other enhancements, the other model (some places call it an R6S, including the US yamaha site) is prior to those, though I presume is an FI model at least.

For the money you're spending on a newish R6, you could easily put a bit aside for a cheap dirt bike - might be a good investment so you can let off steam on a bike that can be crashed many times and not be too expensive Smile.

isn't the R6R the cool looking one and the R6 the ghey one that still looks like the ones when they first went injected (2003)?

if that is the case then it is no contest, the R6R - inless you are ghey that is Thinking

i may be reading it wrong, i only looked at 2006 onwards, reasoning for new bike is reliability, which i feel i wont get with a old and most likely thrashed r1, a 1998 r1 is £580 whereas a 2009 r6 is £670, so i think the money i spend of the r1 would have gone to insurance for the r6 and then some. Does anyone know if there is a price difference between them?

Whats wrong with a bit of ghey Laughing , all jokes aside im still confused to the differences so far i think the r6r is more track based with extra goodies (usd forks etc) but is there more, price differences?

There is only 1 R6 after 2006 in the UK, and its what you are reffering to as the R6R.

In the US Market they sell an R6S, its the same as a 2005 model, but goes through to 09, they also run the R6R next to it, which is just our 2006+ R6.

R6R is the current shaped model.
And the almost identical model from 2006-2007

(Pointy Tail)

The R6 or R6S(in america's and such) is the 2005 Bike.
Square tail, twin lights, and USD forks.

Don't expect new always means reliable.

Personally, in most cases I'd prefer to save some money and put a little aside encase something goes wrong - or even to get it back up to a decent standard. Most times end up quids-in in total.
Also, you can't know that a newer second hand bike won't have been thrashed - and frankly, if someone bought an r6 and thrashed they deserve to be thrashed themselves - a bike's for riding, not the mantle piece Razz.

And as blue suggests yes, you could see the R6S as a bit of an SV650 'gay' bike - a watered down boring version for those that don't want the excitement of a real bike!
Wink Razz

Of course, reality may well be that on the roads you would enjoy the less revvy version - personally I do like revvyness and very precise handling for fun. But I chose a 1000cc bike for daily stuff because I like to be lazy and have decent acceleration regardless of the gear I'm in etc.
