I'm going to be picking a new bike up at the end of the season, as my GSX750 was designed for someone 4'8'' tall. So I want a bike with a higher seat - over 800mm minimum - that would be nice for touring. Not really fussed about engine size

But, there's a problem.

I keep my bike in an outhouse, but it has a narrow door. A really narrow door - 740mm. I can't keep the bike in the yard as the yard is too small to fit even a 125 in, and I can't keep it on the road as it will get nicked or vandalised round here.

So, I need suggestions for a bike that can fit through that door. Something with a half-fairing would be preferable. The original Bandit 600 will fit in, but not the newer ones; an SV650 might work, but are they any good for touring? I'd love a 650 V-Strom, but as far as I can tell, there's no way in hell one of them is fitting through the door. Anyone got a TDM they can run a tape measure over?

Anyone got any bright ideas?

And yes... I have started carrying a tape measure round with me and every time I park near other bikes I've started sneakily measuring them...

You'll get most bikes through if you twitch the handlebars through the door frame surely?

Unless they have really big fairings and not much steering lock.

Can't offer any more advice on which bike though, sorry.

Just have a look on the manufacturers website, they all state the maximum width (normally accross the mirrors - the widest point).

I bet you could knock 30-50mm off that just by wiggling the bars.

Triumph Tiger 1050 and change the bars, as standard they're 840mm, but sure you could fit narrower custom ones.

Kawasaki Versys are quite slim. I was looking at one yesterday. I have similar problems where I live. Thumbs Up

The problem is that there's a wall on one side of the inside of the door, if that makes sense - so I can only wobble one way.

The fairing does play a large part in it - I measured up a Fazer thou the other day, for example, and there's no way on God's earth I'm getting that through. I'd have about 10mm on each side, and any wobble either way would rip up the paintwork.

The bar ends and exhaust on the Suzuki are scratched to buggery as it is Smile

Can't you make a new gate?

I'd have to knock down one wall of the outhouse that leads directly into the street to do so. I live in an end terrace house, so my yard is actually right on the road, parallel to the kitchen.

GSXR1000 K5/K6 - the mirrors should fold in easily and with them in it's around 670mm for the bars which are then the widest point.
The internet lists (I didn't measure that) the overall width with the mirrors as 710-720mm.
Seat height around 800mm apparently.

You don't look at the off-road section enough, only suggest it when people are considering a BMW GS there Razz.

To be fair, I'd often been suggesting one before got one as a do-it-all all-rounder; then I was criticised for suggesting it and not having one Wink.

Damn! And a Pan was top of my list as well. Sad

How much is generally added on to the manufacturers width by the mirrors?

I really fancy a V-Strom, or an F650GS, but both of them as listed are 840-860.

measure the gap, then go look at one at the local dealership, and measure the two widest parts of the fairing etc..

pain in arse but its the only way you can do it.

Off-roady bikes are going to have wide bars. These aren't too big an issue to get through single point gaps like doorways (or car mirrors) but are more of an issue when getting through longer narrow gaps, like an alleyway or between cars.

As I've gone on about before, I prefer my GSXR to my 690 enduro for commuting because it can get through narrow gaps much more smoothly.
