computer not switching on :(

ran the pc this morning and was fine and turned it off for a few hours,switched it on again and it came on for a second and went off,then it didn't come on again after trying.

changed the fuse in the socket and put it in again and then some smoke came from the connector end on the pc,wtf is wrong now?

You need to try a replacement power supply.

The problem is that it could be either the PS or the motherboard. Personally I'd try a new PS and if that didnt work would assume it was the board. The thing is that I have access to spare power supplies.

If you can get a mates PC or something you just need to try the 24 and 4 pin power connectors on the motherboard, if it boots then buy a new PS if it doesn't then it's (and I use the technical term) fucked.

PSU is fucked, most had a fuse in them that will blow. You could try replacing it, but chances are its blown for a reason. Buy a new PSU and hope the motherboard isn't toast.

Take the side of your PC case off and you will see how many watts the PSU is rated for as it's written on the side. either go buy one of the same wattage, or take the PSU out and take it to any PC show (PC world will do) and ask for another.

The PSU is held in with 4 screws at the back, 1 or 2 connections to the motherboard, a connection to each hard disk and CD / DVD drive.

I changed mine about a week ago, it was done in under 5 minutes.

theres 2 collums,voltage and current and at the bottom of them for both is max with 255W

in a seperate colum it says frequency and PEAK 355W ?:S

which one of the 2 is it ?

Just buy a 3 or 4 hundred watt PSU and you'll be fine.

Nope. A good quality PSU can cost hundreds, but £15 might almost get you one that will work.

450W £15.26 + delivery. They can be quite heavy so you might be better off spending £20 on one from a local PC shop.

Be careful not to buy a PSU with a lower 12V rail ampage than the existing supply. 12A rail supplies the motherboard, CPU and graphics (i.e. the important bits).

You see, i had a 300W Bestec (cheap and nasty) unit that died, so i went and assumed a 350W FSP unit would be fine (as it's a better brand, although still low-end). It wasn't, it didn't work. Managed to return it under the DSR as i'd bought it online (i claimed it was dead on arrival, and genuinely believed so at the time). So went and bought a 400W Octigen PSU. And that didn't work either (and i can't return it either now, so it's a paperweight) Whilst the whole time a PSU i'd nabbed from my old gaming machine (noteably a cheap 460W supply with 30A on the 12V rail), worked perfectly!

In the end, i worked out it was the 12V rail ampage preventing these new supplies working because the original supply was 19A, and i read a technical manual for my machine, and it said the machine needs 18A or more on that rail. I didn't check the amps of the FSP supply, but the Octigen was only 12A!!

Another word of warning - when (especially cheap) PSUs die they often take out other expensive components... And the MTBF (Mean Time Before Fail) of these low-end supplies is often only 10,000 hours (just over a year of continuous running) - and by that point 50% of the supplies have failed! For a few extra quid (often as few as 5), you can get supplies with 100,000 hours. Much more reassuring, although of course not quite as assuring as a premium brand and a 5 year warranty

I bought a £90 PSU, lasted 2 years. Bought a £20 lasted 2 years, current PSU is a £17 one, it will probably last the same 2 years. It came with a HORRIBLE fan that made a right racket when the case was level, but silent when tilted forwards. I bought an akasa silent fan and have put it in there connected to the hard drive prower supply with the speed control wire cut to run it on full speed constantly. A week in and it's still running

Some thing like the ColorsIT Gold range are cheap (£20ish) and fairly quiet.

We get through lots of power supplies at work due to carbon fibre dust in the air which gets sucked into the pcs. Very seldom does a blown PSU take out anything else.

If running windows 7 it recommends a 400 watt minimum psu but having said that mine is only 350 and runs fine. Only thing if your hard disk and cd rom are sata you might need an adapter as the one you chose has only 1 sata connection.

PSU requirements depends on the hardware not the operating system. I'm pretty sure a windows 7 netbook won't need 400w
