Hey guys, i'm 16 in feb and wondering what bike i should get as a begginer. I've been looking at a Gilera DNA 50 as i want a BIKE body not a moped shape even though i know they have the same engine.

So any suggestions on a better beginners bike?

Thanks.

if your really serious about getting on 2 wheels as soon as possible i would go for something cheap with a years mot that you can just use until your 17 and then get a 125cc bike.

im anti scooter, hate the fkin things personally but if it is a means to an end and all you are allowed to ride then go for it.

not that you need my support of course! Laughing

Wait until you're 17. 50's are shite. Thumbs Up

Edit: Saying that, the independence at 16 is good. Laughing

get anything you can mate, 50s are obviously slow but they are better than walking!
get as much experience as you can on the road, it will all help.

if i was you i would also be looking at a bike shape rather than a moped, it'll be good for you to learn the gears.

what ever you get make sure you dont go out in tracksuits as they are very bad in the event of an accident, it is probably better to be naked.

Why not go with something geared to get learning on?

Derbi GPR 50 or something like that should do!

Were it me, I'd go for an old cheap TS50, DT50 or similar - maybe consider some of the newer trail style bikes, but I'd keep what I was spending down.
They are fast enough, look fairly 'big' and like a 'real' bike.

+2 on the TS50 idea. That was my first bike and it'll teach you to use gears and clutch etc. whilst not looking like a twat.

Getting a "sports" 50 just makes you look stupid, there's nothing funnier than hearing an RS50 rapidly going through 5 gearchanges in the distance sounding like it must be doing 100mph before coming into view at 31 with a tracksuited youth bent over the tank.

At least an off road style 50cc looks properly proportioned and you could even take it for some gentle off roading.

Yowser... 6 gears on a 50cc bike. That must be an absolute ballache to start off at the lights. Frantically kicking up through the gears as you accelerate to a grand 31mph.

I had a Gilera DNA 50, don't get one, horrible bikes.

I know the ped look is sh!t but just go for it until you're 16.

As others have said it's a means to an end. No matter what bike you get even most 125's, they won't have the look of a 'proper' bike until you actually get one.

Enjoy.

tracksuits are a no no.

you see a lot of the chav ped brigade in their 3 stripes, the first thing that happens if you come off is they melt. the second thing is the hospital spend hours pulling bits of melted nylon out of your already bleeding road rashed legs.

Actually, after looking at that site with the list of 50s, I retract my vote for a ts50.

You should get one of these fly rides instead...

Except that wouldn't be road legal. Has to have a maximum speed of 31mph. Sad

Even if its a motorbike. You only have a "provisional moped licence" aged 16. 17 = provisional motorbike licence.

Quote:

Moped licence requirements
A moped MUST have an engine capacity not exceeding 50 cc, not weigh more than 250 kg and be designed to have a maximum speed not exceeding 31 mph (50 km/h). From June 2003 all EC Type Approved mopeds have been restricted to 28 mph (45 km/h).

[Law RTA 1988 (as amended) sect 108]

To ride a moped, learners MUST

• be 16 or over
• have a provisional moped licence
• complete CBT training

You MUST first pass the theory test for motorcycles and then the moped practical test to obtain your full moped licence. If you passed your driving test before 1 February 2001 you are qualified to ride a moped without L plates (and/or D plates in Wales), although it is recommended that you complete CBT before riding on the road. If you passed your driving test after this date you MUST complete CBT before riding a moped on the road.

[Laws RTA 1988 sects 97(e) & 101 & MV(DL)R regs 38(4) & 43]

Note. For motorcycle and moped riders wishing to upgrade, the following give exemption from taking the motorcycle theory test

•full A1 motorcycle licence
•full moped licence, if gained after 1/7/96
[Law MV(DL)R reg 42]

No, his speedo SHOWED 113kph, he was probably doing a fair bit less. Perhaps we can train you at this young age to be the first 16 year old that understands the innaccuracy of their speedo Cool

Don't get fixated on top speeds for 50cc bikes.
Spend that year learning to go safe and progressive.

You'll learn skills some big bike riders don't bother with.
Filtering...I loose count of bikes sitting in queues.
Cornering....Lazy riding ..again big bikes allow this. With your 49.999999ccs you'll be wanting to read the road whilst keeping the motor spinning..picking the best lines through tight corners......Your pads will last forever Thumbs Up

And another Thumbs Up for geared bikes.

True say dude. i want something that looks good and performs well for a beginners bike, but i guess the point of "MOPED" is to (like you said) read the road and get used to being draged by a motor Razz
